oh we're in a little pickle i fell in uh i fell in the river and it's so cold that it's snowing this much so i lost my paddle that was the biggest deal i changed i had a complete dry change of clothes in my pack.

Uh i changed out and i i'm i'm not so very hypothermically cold anymore bye family love you girls bye first paddle of the season i'm on a river bye autumn.

I am it's cold it's probably about zero degrees right now i'm gonna be out here for two or three nights but we dropped one vehicle off at a spot down river and then the family.

As you saw just dropped me off now normally this river is pretty shallow but because it's early in the season it's moving lots of waterfowl already ah we have to scope this oh no we're good.

We're good  nothing too crazy we still got still got snow on the sides oh there they are up on the bridge it's pretty nice sandbanks coming up here we're cruising.

You see the ice ice on the uh on the shore ah i gotta steer this thing man this is just like pointed straight and hold on pretty cool i'm so happy to be over here nice little sandy gravel banks bluffs i'm gonna i'm gonna paddle for a while.

If i come across any anything interesting i'll i'll let you know there's some rapids and there's a side trip down to a waterfall i'm probably gonna try to take so be an interesting day oh nice deep pool here we're just able to see some rocks underneath.

Really nice rock formations nice smooth old old rock lots of driftwood piled up on the sides ice on the lower branches we're making really good time i am quiet.

There's a couple little pools here and there and i'm pulling over i've been pulling over and fishing them there's one here too pretty windy day tomorrow's supposed to be a bit nicer oh as i'm going along i'm just looking on the side.

There's a lot of flat land on that side not so much here so if that keeps up i'll be able to find a good spot to camp no problem someone's trying to pick out yep  big old hill up in front okay.

So that was part of a trail actually oh there's a grouse right by a pylon nice all right well this will be a bit of actual exploration i don't know where the secondary river that i'm looking for actually joins up there's a trail here.

Used to be a trail across the river it's gone i paddled over here where the trail picks up on the other side of the river i'm gonna hike down and see if not i have to go back into the river paddle down and then paddle upstream and then hike.

Uh against the river or next to the river i'm gonna see if i can get to it this way we'll bring the camera uh maybe a snack or two but it's not bad because i've been in the boat the whole time and i'm pretty chilled so i guess we'll just bring the camera and we'll go.

Bye all right ah the map the map would be a good thing to bring oh yes look at this decent amount of snow here let's walk on the side that didn't last too long i found something.

Poor guy cardinal i really don't know anyway this is serving no purpose it's a pretty difficult walk in the snow my feet are gonna get wet and it goes on and on and on i walked over.

Until i rounded a bend and just continues to go so i'm more uh apt to put in my boat and try and find the the riverside and walk along the shore as opposed to cut through the bush or this trail.

It's just not easy going so we'll go back around and we'll see i'll check this out too i saw it too gross so far lots of signs of birds in here all right back into the main river here we go into the.

Good choppy current which very nicely all day all right i've found the turn off here the other river it's it's left at this t instead of right but the current is super strong i don't see a trail i don't know how i'm going to.

Get up it very far we're going to see if i can find a shell on the side somewhere but paddling against the current for very long is not really an option  i researched it the best of my knowledge there was a trail a full kilometer trail one way.

But maybe that's up a bit maybe well i know the water's usually not this high who knows i'm gonna try my best though that was the whole point of this trip for me this little side trip find some cool spot but.

Like i said i'm not gonna be able to paddle up against this current very long or at all holy smokes man not even moving i'm gonna try to pull up here on the shore carry over and see what the deal is but.

It's not looking good looking good okay we got good news and bad news good news is i found the trail where i think i found the trail i was told was on the right side of the river and i didn't know if they met river right or left anyways it's river left but.

I found it let me show you what the problem is though so it's a pretty defined trail some moose tracks on it okay right here and it goes and i was like.

Sweet i'm gonna go get my stuff and leave my canoe here and go down and try and fish some of these rapids and waterfalls but look i come to the trail and it's completely washed out.

Like deep enough to paddle through so i i figured i'd go up around and it just keeps going up and higher so this might be just have to be a recon mission i'll still camp out i'll still do the whole trip but as far as fishing and going and doing this side trip this might just have to be a recon mission for when the water's down.

Or for when i can walk through water without getting just completely soaked and frozen but what i am going to do right now is try to pick my way along i'm going to get back in the boat i'm going to try and pick my way up a little bit see if i come back to a trail that a spot where it's good to go but.

We'll see i'll see what i can do i'm going to try my best do this i'm going to try my best we'll see how far we can get up the river and if it's not anything then at least i know and i'll come back in about a month or so and brave the bugs but it'll be much more doable then.

And maybe the snow will be gone by then too all right take two pull this up at a different spot i have not walked at all to find the trail but i've crossed that other spot where it was flooded out.

So we'll go see if this is it here's those moose tracks again so that's a good idea all right that's a good sign i mean right here they're old and sunken in but that's what they are so it does look like a trail again yes sweet.

There's the river this is a definite trail okay uh-oh it looks like i'm coming to the same darren thing again ugh gross poop lots of gross looks like i'm coming the same darn thing right here.

I want to keep picking my way along and see what happens but i don't know anyways like i said this is a good scouting mission we'll check things out and come back maybe bring somebody once we know the deal we won't have to do all this nonsense with someone.

Well no go on the side trip but that's all right next time hear the snow though inside i'm gonna take up uh take my time fishing a little bit more considering the time isn't gonna be spent going down that side trip well it is snowing.

Ever so lightly but it's snowing and i'm glad that it's not rain that's a plus we're going to be coming up with some rapids here soon looks like they're pretty significant on the map so i do believe we'll be portaging but we'll see.

Current it's beginning to look a lot like christmas is this spring what is this spring spring it's coming right through the forest so much water this is reminiscent of my last.

Uh last year's first canoe trip hopefully it stops just as quick or it doesn't even matter do what you will clouds well we're portaging around that lots of standing waves in there i hope it gets i'm getting some of this.

Kids it's like 5 30 it's gonna get dark soon and it's freaking this much snow out and it's like a good two hours from my place at least so i'm just looking for a spot to camp for the night i'll probably just look for a flat spot maybe on that side of the road because.

The river over here there's no real good spots to camp out i just don't want her driving in this you know what i mean i want to go home believe me i'm done i lost my paddle like i would continue paddling down the river i i'm totally fine i lost my paddle i can't go anymore you know what i mean this is the only time that's ever.

Happened to me this really really really makes me rethink my whole i don't need two paddle uh nonsense because i've never lost mine before uh i don't usually do too much river i hadn't done too much river tripping when i had had that thought that frame of mind that's changing i'm doing a lot more river tripping in a.

Secondary paddle even if just a single blade attached to my boat so that i don't lose it would have made all the difference here so um yeah i live and learn i guess live and learn and then get loves i need to.

I gotta get a tarp up it's snowing so much and uh i'm pretty cold i just wanna crawl into my sleeping bag right now i don't even really care too much about getting a fire i just would like to get my tarp up crawl into my sleeping bag and get warm and then like.

In an hour or something like that or an hour after that then i'll i'll just like make up a freeze-dried meal or something um right in front of where i'm sleeping because i i'm not done i'm done i'm done i have to i have to bail i can't go anymore and i would bail right now i just don't like.

I said want will driving in this in the dark or whatever the case may be with the kids and stuff so we'll call her tomorrow or i'll i'll call her tonight on the on the inreach and and let her know what happened and ask her to come in the morning but i'll get back with you when i find a.

Spot it was the worst case scenario i i went against my better judgment too so um yeah that was a i really wasn't sure about going and and i did it and then this little it was the last little rapid two that i could have messed up in and i did i freaking it was the last little one and it was smooth sailing for the rest of the day.

Anyways i have to come back and do this real trip now but this whole thing look at this nonsense this is spring is this spring so much snow i'm finally back to all my gear here this is all my wet stuff.

On the ground all getting just frozen solid which whatever but uh um i gotta find a spot like this pretty pretty hilly and pretty valley so i might be hiking back up that way.

I'm just trying to find a spot guys it doesn't need to be much just flatten off the road yeah this is gonna have to work lost my water filter too so i need to be by the river somewhat so i can get water ah to boil somehow i was.

Managed to hang on to the canoe and my backpack and somehow the yolk stayed in i lost the one part of my rod and i lost one part of my rod i lost my paddle and my water filter this is a big big learning thing i've been on a lot of canoe trips this.

Is the first one of this year and man i could have easily poor target around that but it's just and i and i ran worse rapids then it's just the boat it's like has no rocker on it's completely flat it caught the side the way you cut the side just sunk me it happened so quick.

  i lost my sunglasses too like all in all everything's okay you know i mean everything's fine it could have been way worse i'm happy overall it's just uh it's humbling getting pretty difficult.

To film here with the thing dying every two seconds but here's my little area i cleared out right here i'm going to hang a tarp from there to there the road's literally right up there but it's close enough.

Where i can potentially see help if i need it or get will to pick me up and this is all i need right here pretty big decent amount of room in here i did up this side i'm gonna undo it right now just because i'm getting smoked out with this uh bush buddy in here.

Yeah okay anyway it's gonna be all right oh we got a lot of room like i moved i'm cooking here i got my my camp my bed here i'm gonna move it back over here once i'm done and sleep here but we're just gonna make some uh pepper beef with rice tonight.

Call it easy i messaged will on the inreach let her know what's going on and of course she's like oh do you need me to come get you now and it's okay she's just too good so anyways i told her no i'm fine it's all good are you gonna be warm enough everything's fine everything's fine so uh.

As soon as emerald gets to school tomorrow we'll make the drive here and i'll probably be picked up around like 10 11 who knows told us to drive until she saw the camp on the side of the road but i like these because they give you an option or you can put like 250 mils in or fill it to.

Easy line fill line eight which is so much easier than trying to measure when you're out to measure intro when you're on the bush right kyle can't be measuring weighing and measuring things over here so we got that.

All squared away do this on the ground i'm almost happy that it happened like there's no harm no foul i lost a couple things but it's better than thinking that i'm invincible and doing this in the middle of the bush or.

The wilderness you know anywhere i can't get rescued like this so um part of the reason i did take the chance that i did even with all my gear and stuff in the canoe this time of year it's snowing like it's just it felt like it was okay uh it wasn't okay it wasn't okay to dip.

But it felt like i was it wasn't the end of the world so and it's not so anyways just sitting here reflecting on it like i'm just trying to process it all like i i paddled through some decent sized waves today more so than i've done with this boat this boat has no keel on it like no like.

Rocker at the front sorry not keel rocker like up at the front it's just flat so it digs and waves come in and it sits pretty low it's just not meant for it but anyways i do have a boat specific for this type of stuff coming and just don't have it yet okay it's time to eat let's uh stokes this fire up a little bit more and stir.

Some food around and put it into our face but excuse me  i got this long kyle st kyle styles fork so i don't get my thingies all danky when i'm eating all these coaches oh yeah it's done oh warmth inside.

Mm-hmm oh yeah oh that's gonna go a long way no joke wow but i am the winner of the trip alpine air well i'm in bed it's eight o'clock no.

8 20. so i'm probably just gonna listen to my book on tape and get some sleep it feels nice to lay down i'm warm i'm completely warm everything's fine now so there's no worries about staying cold all night or anything like that so.

I think the snow has turned to rain that's weird it's like uh it's very wet anyways and it's still coming down so we're gonna we're just gonna stay in bed you know we're gonna stay in bed oh.

I'll make breakfast in the morning i don't know maybe i'll tell her to bring my paddle if i tell her to bring an extra paddle i can do the rest of the trip but i'm kind of done now i don't know i'd rather come and restart when.

When the fishing's better when it's not such a torrent anyway we'll figure it out oh man it's still snowing oh  ah i texted will.

It's 7 13. i got up a couple times i just got up for my last sleeping stint uh slept well stayed very warm chilled now because i've been out of my sleeping bags i i something like my.

Brain jacket my ring pants on man i didn't sweat too much either so anyways there's my message just sent i'm kind of chilled now i'm just gonna lay back in bed for a bit because it's only seven uh the kid doesn't get off to school until uh another hour hour and a half and then uh again a couple hours here so.

There's no rush and uh it's actually turning not nice the wind is picking up and like i said it's still snowing so i will make some breakfast soon but i'm just going to tuck back in bed here and wait see if she replies but like i said it's uh is this spring is this.

Is this marsh goes out like a lion in like spring like a lion oh like a all right it's getting close to crunch time here she doesn't know exactly where i am so i pulled my boat up there onto the road i'm i'm really cold now.

Being over there uh my feet i only have these camp shoes which have they're like like water shoes so they're not great for keeping the snow out uh i gotta crawl back into my sleeping bag i think i'm i'm pretty chilled and starting to.

Shiver a bit but that's where my my canoe was all night i just dragged it up there but you can see my setup did the trick man that's a really really really useful helpful tarp when uh.

It can act like a tent like this you know what i mean and this is a crappy setup and look at all my my dry space under here no snow so i'm pretty happy about that just finishing off some jerky here and uh and waiting for my wife.

To get back to you when she gets here you know what i'm just i'm reminiscing on that whole tip and it's like i wasn't even cold like it shocked me i remember like gasping for air when i was breathing but i i didn't like freeze like you know.

What i mean like i do remember thinking oh good my head came back up above the water so that was a bonus yeah i was under for like maybe not long a second or two and then like just like thinking like am i gonna pop back up.

Type thing and then as i was being because i went down maybe a couple hundred yards or a couple hundred yeah meters um my feet maybe not that far my feet kept bouncing off rocks i remember from the california thing trying to keep my feet elevated so that i can get pinned.

Like so i think it didn't get wedged in rocks or in logs or anything like that and then as soon as i tried to grab on a couple things there was no going as soon as like i got into like a little bit of an eddy or the current slowed down a bit i was able to grab onto a tree because my other hand was holding the canoe still and i was.

Trying to actually i had the canoe and the bag in my hands as i was floating trying to keep my uh from being under the waves my life jacket did everything my life jacket saved everything it would have been a whole different story sorry about that one um but yeah it was uh.

An experience for sure it's one thing like i dipped in the california river with kyle but we were in the middle of the summer and we were out there doing that we had no packs on it was like the day thing and this is like is this spring this is this is spring.

Yeah snow very very cold i'm by myself got all my gear and everything and then dumped and the only saving grace was my life jacket and being close to this uh road because other than that i'd have to hike out far probably just stash my gear hike up far.

And come back for it change out like change out the clothes completely find out where i was on my gps yeah exactly call it in or or call my or hit the sos which i wouldn't want to have to do you know i mean at all i i don't want to be that guy but it is there for that reason.

I'm just these things all running through my head it's my fault it's it's it's not the right boat for it i haven't been properly trained yet which is again coming this year um but i ran a few earlier yesterday and everything was fine it's just i think i came at it at an.

Angle because i had stopped in an eddie to look at it i think i came in an angle and when it came on it so i pushed me sideways and i i went to counteract it but when i counteracted it i think i i tipped yeah because i i went like this to throw my weight this way or whatever i think i tipped the boat inside or i should have i should have thrown my.

Weight this way towards it and tipped the boat up like a cup away from the water so it didn't spill in but still those walls are flat or flat uh no gunnels on it at all it's the wrong tub but anyways live and learn and then get loves like i've been saying you know she made good.

Timing oh piss hi what do you got to tell them say i rescued you what's up um look at me not the camera what's up we watched.

Lilly uh-huh and we didn't do our beds uh-huh we didn't play okay we didn't but we brushed our teeth nice and then we um can you nice i'm really cold so can you tell me the rest of the story once i get all my.

Stuff done and um we rescued you you sure did thank you high five oh your hands are freezing what your hands are freezing you're right i fell in at the very last i i tipped like i went in to the rapids but the very last spot where it could have been.

Bad because i ran a few already it was fine and then i freaking hit it sideways and as soon as i went as soon as i started the side the waves hit me on the side and tipped me right in like completely in the water i went down like 100 meters or so in the rapids i.

Held on to my boat and my backpack thank goodness yeah my can my my paddle's gone my glasses and my uh water filter but i kept my yoke somehow and half my half my uh fishing rod's gone.

You know it's okay but you got pretty far did i i wasn't i thought you were spending the night yeah i'll tell you all about that we couldn't get onto that river it was all crazy okay i'm gonna get in my car now i'll see you at home all right.

Yep have a nice sleep all right thanks i think she'll wait to see if i got my keys and the car starts we'll see nope nope she gone oh at least she came to pick me up.

Made good timing too all right folks well you know you win some you lose some i don't feel too bad about this one kind of more of a scouting learning mission i'll see you guys in the next one and uh we won't fall in the water.
