Hey guys how you doing joe here today we are on an adventure we have to go see if the ice is off of the lakes yet near my house i have a big lake the ice is off but typically the ice on the inland lakes where i like to go to get seclusion wilderness experience.
They hold on to their ice for much longer than the big lakes do around here i've packed a hammock in my backpack so that's not the normal for me we have to see if i can set that up properly and get a good night's sleep but first we got to travel about two hours north of my place to see if we can even get the paddle wet.
looking good man it feels so good to be back out here i've camped out here before i never see anybody out here it's always a good time i'm gonna pull up behind me here to shore and set up my hammock.
I was planning on exploring a little bit and maybe going down a little bit further to set up my camp but it is threatening to rain it was just sprinkling it is sprinkling right now so we'll get camp all squared away then maybe we'll paddle down to the end but uh let's go see if i can set this hammock.
Up oh that's that's just awesome i went into the water to here i wanted the water to hear dry wet soaking wet good start good start joe now this is certainly a lot of gear for one night but i have some big camping trips big.
Canoe trips planned in the near future and i bought this recreational barrel works barrel and harness uh from andy so we'll see i plan on using this for my food bag uh for my food barrel and extra stuff my second bag we'll see how it works out i'm going to attempt to put my panic.
Apart when it's time to put my hand off these two trees they might be a little too far apart we'll see now like i've mentioned i have only spent a handful of nights and hammocks and only really one night in this particular hammock that we're gonna use this time this is the dream hammock that eugene.
Q underground quilts helped me out with so i've got all their stuff their top quilt their bottom quilt that's why it's a little bit big because i brought the cold weather ones my summer ones wouldn't cut it cold weather ones are gonna be too much but the summer stuff was not enough excuse.
Me all right so this is the hammock dream hammock one side out that side inside out here and then the bag just kind of stays on it we got straps for the trees as far as i know you take the running end and you slide it through.
The loop at the end pull it through and there's this little elephant trunk dealie this little elephant guy pull this through too get in your home all right pull it up a bit center down i think we're ready to put the old hammock up so we've got some dyneema.
And that just goes right into the trunk of the elephant little elephant trunk okay we're almost done pretty pretty slick right this is my ugq outdoor under quilt and i'll tell you what it's rated to here in a second.
Because i don't remember i think negative 20. oh look it says joe i've only used a couple times it's still pretty new only use it once i think where is the rating bro negative 18 or zero fahrenheit negative 18 celsius zero fahrenheit so he's got all these tie ups to uh make it secure and keep me warm i should.
Be quite warm uh tonight which is good because there's a chance it might snow chance it might rain and snow how that goes i want to put that in there first off as per chad from ugq's advice just to simulate some weight in there.
And we gotta get this under quilt on and the underquilt might be the hardest thing for me to do although it shouldn't be too hard and i hope i brought my tarp i hope i brought my tarp if i didn't bring my tarp that's a problem.
If i didn't bring my turf that's a huge problem there we go we're good we're solid all right we got to get this on here now i think all of this is just connected with one clip nice and easy right oh i think i broke the snap off that one maybe not.
No yeah this side doesn't have one either so we're all right we all right we're going to be a height we're going to be all right can you hear me i don't know i think it's too tight boys and girls it's too tight can you hear me can you feel me.
It's gonna be too tight i'll stop now you gotta get the hammock we gotta get the banana in the hammock basically all right all right the files are in the computer yeah okay and loosen it up there loosen it up with those and then these come out.
Too there's all these little um bungee pulls and looseners and tighteners and fasteners so i'm just going to loosen it all up and uh lay in it and get the right feel the right pitch as it were i don't know if that's the right word or not.
Get in and see it wasn't so bad it wasn't as hard as i thought it was going to be i might be sagging to touch too much oh it's actually pretty flat that's not too bad i'm okay with that for now if i have to tweak it later on i'm good with that i need to do some more stuff.
Uh camp wise so um let's get this tarp on i still got firewood and i wanted to try my hand at some fishing see how that goes i don't even know if i need these things out here at all okay let's get the tarp up so this is pretty cool i found my old.
Kyle made tarp and this is the ridge line to it it has these pre-made prussics right on it uh with a little aluminum toggles so this ugq quilt or sorry tarp has these rings on it and one goes on either side and you just tighten it right up i'll do the same the.
Other side and that's not going anywhere it's super slick and easy i might have to slide the whole thing yeah i got more room on this side so all i do is slide this toggle down so i just press it down to where i think it's good and then match it up on this side.
Keeping it real tight tight like a tiger tiger now for the cool part the cool part you say this isn't already been cool oh just wait just you wait so we've got little snaps obviously on the tarp and we're going to have an.
Enclosed shelter did a video a couple summers ago sorry exact opposite a couple winters ago with the dudes from ugq where we camped in northern michigan and they showed me how to use this hammock and they hooked me up with it and uh yeah that.
Video was called like floating wall floating four wall shelter or something along those lines on the ends they've got these handy dandy cord tighteners you just pull it cinch everything down nice and easy all right gross in the background and everything check out my four-walled floating.
Shelter pretty taut pretty taut a little bit of slack on this one maybe pretty happy man all came together pretty easily nice and wide we got a lot of room in there so when it rains if it rains i can stay in there and.
Read a book or maybe cook on my bush buddy i'm sure i could have done it a little bit better but this is pretty pretty good for me so i'm pretty happy now it's a matter of if i can actually sleep in it and we'll see that tonight but nice let's get out i want to go.
I hope you guys can hear that bird i want to go get out in the water see if i can get a fish and uh collect some firewood from around the shore things are coming together and the rain is holding off and that looks pretty freaking sweet from here actually i want to show you guys in here.
Because i know i'd like to see if i was watching so you don't have to do all of them undo all of them to get in obviously but just showing a couple different uh options like i could now tie this up you know what i mean have one side closed or whatever i obviously don't even have.
To set it up in this a-frame configuration i can set it up as a normal target as well pretty big super lightweight i want to give a huge thank you to the ugq guys again super awesome dudes and uh i haven't seen them in a while so hopefully you go into the states sooner than later.
And say hello i promise i am going out there i just uh before i head out i'm getting kind of cold because my foot like it's actually soaked through like there's no uh no dry nothing my sock's gonna pour water out of it here um actually i'm not gonna take my sock off i'm going to put my.
Uh neoprene on over top and it'll just keep me that much warmer even though i'm wet because my boots soaked through too so there's no even if i put a new sock on which i do have one change of socks uh it's just gonna get that sock wet and i'd prefer to have that for tomorrow or for night time or.
Whatever i need it for so maybe i'll put my other one on just to balance it out too and uh in case it does rain well enough i can already feel the warmth that's good okay i'm gonna get all ready and i'll see you on the water pretty cold but it's a really nice day.
The rain is holding off i just have a little bit of a chill i don't know if the fish will be biting or not we shall see snag anyways um no luck on this lake so i'm gonna head over to the next one there's like i don't know a couple.
Hundred meter portage i believe get over there see if i can't get a fish be nice too i have food it'd be nice to grab a fish it might be too early i talked to somebody when i was getting when i was putting the boat in he was driving by and he stopped to talk to me because nobody's out here.
He said he's been trying for past couple days but that they he seems to think that they're full they're all fed up right now so i don't know oh it followed it right up it followed it right up and splashed oh my god 100 100 100 100.
I think it was a lake trout that was down deep so that wasn't a snag i'm gonna keep trying to fish man i'm leaving some of my stuff there stuff that i hope not to need on the other lake so i'm actually on the lake now that i did a solo camp last fall i stayed like five days or something.
So i left i remember leaving a whole bunch of really good firewood and birch park there and obviously it has snowed and been a whole winter and almost like i don't know a couple weeks of spring however long of spring it's been with rain so let's go see we're gonna go check it.
Out check out the spot see if anybody's been there see if the firewood and birch park is still there and if it is i will bring it back with me and that will save me from cutting any kind of firewood uh even if i have to take two trips back through the portage.
With this boat it's fine it's a short portage i just got through i am very hungry now and i'm pretty freaking cold too but i am bound and determined to get a fish so i might even have my little butt down this whole lake and hop into the other one if if i can't.
Catch one in this lake but uh seeing that one come to the surface really really sparked my interest i would not have been on it this much if that didn't happen but i did and i am it looks untouched we'll go on up there check it out nice.
Looks pretty dry too spider webs on it yeah yeah it's fine and it's a bunch of fat wood too if i can recall properly try to put birch bark oh yeah that one's a bit damp but anyway oh there's my my pot hook yes the one i drilled the.
Hole through remember do you remember do you remember when i drew the hole to the pothook it was last i wish it was december was autumn all right we'll stop now that's cool nice anyone.
Bonus well i'm back on my lake now i got too cold i didn't go too low over i just went the one over my hands were numb on that other lake was super windy i'm back on my camp lake i'm gonna go back to camp i'm really.
Hungry i'm gonna get some fire all right i gotta get a fire going i gotta get some food on and then uh who knows if there's time you're joking you're joking just says i'm about to say i'll come back out if there's time i get a beautiful bass.
A beautiful golden bass that is going to be a delicious golden supper oh my goodness look at the color look at the color beautiful beautiful fish super happy okay that's supper sorted but ma'am son just when i was about to say that's it.
You know what i mean like i'll come back or whatever i was trying this whole time i thought i got a bite or two but nothing came with it and then i cast as i was talking to you ah thank you thank you cool i'm happy i can't pass up a good situation to get some wood there's some.
Sticking out here standing that i think i will add to my wood collection oh yeah we're good she's dry okay balance is key boys and girls balance is key it's tall.
Okay okay i was thinking maybe i would just go under my shelter and uh have a bush buddy fire eat my chili because i was kind of sulking and not getting fish but now that mr bass has graced us with his presence i do want to have a big fire and i do.
Want to warm up and dry out and sit out there as long as i can there's some pretty menacing uh clouds coming over but we've been lucky so far and uh super happy about that i can see sprinkles on the water the.
Rain is coming hopefully she holds off for a little bit longer worse comes to worse like i said i'll just go under the tarp but it'd be nice to a big rip roar and dry out and stuff so that's what we're hoping for wow yeah this is one of that same exact stuff where i was raving about.
Oh that was so amazing it's that same exact wood it's raining create a little bit of a wind block here so the uh the pitter patters just keep getting at her you know no slow down so i want to get this cooked up as quick as i can um let's do that now.
This is the last of a fish crisp bag from seasons prior little extra extra moss and leaf litter on that one a little garnishing big brother have you heard the good news okay okay okay okay coming down the mountain.
Almost so that's a nice pan full of fish if i do say so myself soaked on that that'll be enough food for me a little joe's belly little joe's little belly.
Good the barrel is going to make a good nice little seat nice little seat cheers oh man super tasty yeah it's nice to be out here again i can feel the warmth on my leg.
This is my cold foot you know what little bass bone in there i'm gonna get rid of that when i got back to camp i switched out my wet neoprene and my wet sock for my dry neoprene there but uh oh yes just even putting my foot on the rock underneath is helping.
There's fish jumping out there oh no i stepped on my stake stepped on my stake i broke it i'll have to get a new one so do.
my hip has been very sore for a long time is there anything you can do about that or does it just slowly degrade as you get older i would really like to know i really like to fix my hip.
I don't know what the heck is wrong with just if i sit in a canoe wrong for too long or if i lay on it wrong or if i walk too much it just hurts a lot i'm not too old all right so we're just gonna measure out how much water we need we need some more.
Well as you can probably tell my headlamps about to die and i'm just enjoying this hot chocolate so i'll get with you when i get into the hammock i have more batteries over there i'm just going to finish this up and head on over there this is very tasty though.
Um refined pallet all right that's much better a little air horn my butt wipe that i need to keep in my sleeping bag with me to keep uh from freezing and or being super cold in the morning i've gotta organize things in here like.
Crazy one thing i do want to do i have my grill over here i'm just gonna go run and put it over with my food and all my cooking stuff and new socks fresh new socks new long johns try and uh get all situated in here all right well i'm all tucked in i've.
Got an extra puffy here on my sweater i can feel the warmth coming in already so wish me luck and i will uh i'll see you guys in the morning hopefully hopefully i get a good night's sleep and hopefully that was all in frame good night.
Good night raining been raining quite a bit it's about three in the morning now going back to bed good morning i slept okay i'd get up like 15 times to pee and that's not very convenient in a hammock my hip is messed up.
I i'm laying here aching my hip my it's right below my hip where my leg my top my leg bends like than a joint there right below the actual hip in the in the socket of my my thigh and my hip i don't know if you can understand what i mean but it hurts it's aching so it's completely.
Noticeable um i don't even know what time it is it is 7 30 so i guess it's time to get out of here it's raining quite a bit i might just lay down a little for a little bit longer but i gotta go pretty soon here.
Yeah it is icing up on the uh yeah it's going to slush on the tarp it's pretty cold i stayed warm though that's one thing i want to let you know i stayed completely warm this thing is sagging like crazy i did not set it up properly but i stayed warm for sure and i did.
Sleep so holy smokes yeah i'd say it is cold oh man what a way to wake up yeah it's like snow falling in the lake oh my hip i can barely walk what is wrong oh.
This is an issue this is a big issue we've got a lot of extra room and another whole other bag with that barrel so i'm not taking the time to break all this down and stuff it back into where it needs to go properly this is just going the old pack down joe way right.
Inside the backpack we have one portage two lakes to paddle it's not so bad but i'm gonna make up some breakfast underneath this tarp i just wanted to get this out of the way first so this another purpose for this turf like i i can set up my time if i set this up.
Higher and it's sagging a little bit because of the rain but i can put poles going from either side and really push this out i can put my tent under here with no fly or i could just have this as its own thing where it can cook under and stuff like i said especially if it's up a bit.
Higher but anyways let's get that bush buddy rocking i saved this and this would be plenty to boil my water plus i got some other one dry stuff that was under here dry-ish stuff that was under here so what you want to do with the oatmeal.
Is you pour the oatmeal into a container see and if you're feeling a little randy you know just double yourself up there and then what you want to do is take the water that you've procured pour it on top of them their oats and use a fat wood spoon type thing to eat.
So it tastes extra turp and tiny and you really appreciate spoons and don't forget to bring them the next time this has been morning routine in the rain sleet and snow with repel joe stick with me boys and girls the outdoor circus continues.
But who you know really okay i'm not hating this tarp set up at all pretty happy with this whole camp there's a nice amount of space underneath here it tastes fine using this too no big deal okay i'm going to eat this i'm going to pack the rest of my stuff.
Up and start paddling portaging this oatmeal's hitting the spot all right gopro died on me the last clip just uh too cold for it but snow has stopped and it's turned into more rain so that's good i don't want to see no more snow this year we're all packed up on our way to the.
First portage thanks a lot guys for watching but i appreciate it i had a really good time it was due so in the future lots of canoe tripping and i gotta figure out what's going on with this hip because that can be a hindrance for sure so good trip figure that out good trip.
To keep getting wet and realize it's not the end of the world deal with early spring cold catch a fish sleep in a hammock lots of lots of not the norms for this little guy so really good trip you guys have a good day okay.
