Huh? Very unclear how the chalk ticket pertains to the spike

Though the spike modified into once worn, it wasn't with no doubt the most worn merchandise. In most cases, they'd circle obvious numbers or letters, or dot them, on the side of cans/botttles/jugs of beverages, and “leave their trash” on the desk of a park. Then somebody, per chance dressed as a metropolis worker or landscaper, would arrive and “orderly it up”… then decipher the code. 😉
