Unusual Tarp Shelter Overnight Spring Camp.
Hey folks how you doing i'm out here at a lakeside camp early spring there's still ice on the water i'm gonna sleep out under a canvas tarp with a wool blanket cook some food just enjoy the sunshine.
The nice weather this is a newer wool blanket and i've not used it before it's all merino wool it was a little bit too big for the straps that i had so all i did was uh tie some canadian jam knots with paracord onto the loops on this y-nut pack.
And that's how i used to attach things on my old expedition condor they didn't have straps so that worked out obviously just fine and it's readily available and easy big old blanket it's gonna keep beauty and eye warm.
Tonight it's obvious it's obviously a nice day out got the council tool axe i've been loving this axe lately get a bunch of firewood filter water bottle and my cooking cup and a spoon in there.
I guess we'll just get out what we need right now the saw the axe the tarp i've also got my fishing rod down by the water i brought that with me just you know in hopes just cutting a pole for my.
Tarp tent i'm gonna try a new setup this is the smaller of the two uh canvas tarps i have i don't know what this one is six by eight maybe so i've not done it with a rectangular tarp before i'll try and make the little tent.
See how small it is see if we can both beauty and i can fit in it see if it even works before that i need a stick to hold up in the middle and it's not going to be too long as i imagine it's going to be pretty short with just that little bit of material as.
Opposed to a 10 by 10 which i'm normally used to using for it okay let's try that just flat note this end a bit what i'm going to attempt to do is to move these in about a foot the front uh.
Stakes in about a foot give myself a little bit of slack here so i can pull the front up and put the uh log underneath and we'll see where it goes from there true joe fashion i've not done this in practice this is all on the fly.
All right let's see well that's small doesn't even need i'm this pull it the back two in the back we'll see hmm give me a minute we'll work this out no it doesn't look promising right now.
Okay that's something just try to get all the kinks out try to get all the sags out try to get nice and taut if you can i think it's big enough to fit in we'll see the advantages of being like a little.
Guy a little guy like me sometimes just sometimes so i'm glad to have these heavy-duty steaks that's for sure okay now what i can pull out the top in the back see how that works see how that looks yeah okay.
I think it's coming i think it's coming along okay looking too bad the back is gonna have to get figured out because i can't go right down i'll show you i think that's looking pretty good you know what i mean but then this back part specifically at the bottom.
If i pull it down it's going to be saggy so if i pull it straight back that's not so bad i'll get a little bit of air in here but that's not too bad either if i put a tall stake i might be able to just do that there or if i bring it down and move the sides.
Out i might be able to do it too let's try that no it's not so bad if i bring it down in the back i do have to fix up the sides but i think that's what i'll do okay that's taut that is taut on the back i don't hate that at all guys.
Okay new tarp shelter set up bam now we'll see what it did to the sides though made him a little droopy so i think we can fix that it's a bit rocky here okay yeah good it's all hot.
This is gonna work pretty slick so you can certainly do this with a still nylon tarp obviously again i think this is 8x6 nice and taut let's see how much room i have that'll work that'll definitely work it's a little.
Tight i'm not going to lie then beauty's got that whole area right there but like yeah i could even no i want my head near the openings first condensation but even lay this way the options are endless.
Yeah this will work yeah it's a bit tight i'm not gonna lie bit tight i wonder if you yeah then you're a little bit outside of it but anyways it'll work pretty cool just try it out anyways whoa look at my uh cranes i'll get my um.
My we got my ground sheet in there make this place home for tonight you know what i think i can cut that stick a bit shorter and give myself a little bit more room in there i ruined it.
I ruined it all now let's see if this can go back in i'm scared i've got too much scared to cut too much scared i cut too much off i'm scared i cut too much off okay if i just pull if i just do a little stake from the front going down this will fix this and i'll have much.
More room in there you can't leave well enough alone can you joe no no this will be better in the long run anyways uh okay now i've got to go around and tighten the pegs up but that's not a big deal.
Just beast of a full blanket in there all right we've got more room with that gone but it kind of shrunk down so i don't know it was a good trade-off or not but it is what it is uh somewhere in the middle of this height and the other height would have been ideal.
Jump in the gun joe oh i know i said i wasn't gonna have beauty with me all the time and i'm not just it is how it is right now ah starving the old genoa cheese and mustard wrap.
Style wrap oh hi beauty what's my food beauty good it's warm it's nice i'm gonna try some fish in here in a minute see if i can catch some supper.
If not i got a dehydrated meal ah i'll get back with you guys soon so should be up shallow it's spring time i've caught one splake here before a couple years ago come here a handful of times i've never.
Seen anyone here i see lots of uh signs of people there's still snowmobile trails across the ice what ice is left at least there's some cutwood here and there it's a good spot though crown there dang it bobby propane is my hobby.
They see me selling propane now they're trying to copy come on fishy you know you want it i was just out collecting wood and got a nice big one here nice and dry dead standing and then there was a big old uh spruce tree that.
Looked like lightning hit and it cracked and split over like i'm talking big like anyways i was able to reach in off the break just kind of shimmy this out it's solid like uh very solid thick i believe it's got some resin and the knots here too so.
You can split this down and or have the fire on top of that be pretty useful for me um there's another big one i found let's go get that some pretty thick bush back in here ah there it is.
One of those dead standing leaning there pretty decent size around and dead and seasoned we did it okay so there's there's that that that this one here looks good to me.
Good all-around size if you're wondering why i'm cutting it so high like i often get that question i often get that question it's because it's easier to stand up and cut the bottom part is usually no good and if i do one i can just kind of kick.
It out after i don't really need to even cut it again so it's just easier for me all around like that and like i said the bottom part weighs about ah 15 times the weight of the top part soaking wet i'm not gonna use it.
Okay maybe i'll uh i might cut buck this into one two pieces before i carry it back just so it doesn't get hung up on all the trees along the way wow first try all right.
Dr camp we go i've got all this wood cut up i ended up splitting one of these i believe it's white spruce and the rest of my knowledge i've used white spruce for the bow drill before i think i'm gonna try to whip up a bow drill kit real quick and see if i can light my fire tonight.
With a bow drill if not no big deal but that's my mission i haven't done a bow drill in years over a year definitely you can hear how seasoned it is the wood it's nice to hear the birds again.
Axle make quicker work than shaving it all down with my knife just gotta be careful to not take off too much can't put it back on that's what they tell me roughed out well it's been a minute since you've seen me.
I went and took beauty for a hike i collected a maple sapling and i made a bow because there was no boat no maple around here i collected a ton of birch bark thin birch bark and some cedar.
I grabbed this bone was at this campsite here from last time tripper and i were here i brought this bone for tripper and it was sitting around here so anyways i i smashed it over a rock and it broke in half and i carved out the middle a little bit for an indent.
So that's the top for my bearing block and i've burned in my my uh divot i just have to cut my notch now and then go for my amber actually i should give this top another little top up.
Just to make it thin and skinny at the top because it wore down some in the bone as i was drilling in the first hole burning in as it is as it were as it might be.
Fat on one side that goes down it's getting on the top and that goes up whoa beauty all right let's see how she goes beauty is chomping on the other side of it now this wood might not even be.
Doable who knows whoa i got a nice big pile of dust seems to have gone out i'm going to adjust everything and give it another shot here and then.
If it doesn't work i'll call it good because uh there's enough dust there where it should have caught if it's going to so we'll just refresh everything and do it again well if that doesn't stay lit.
Then i don't think it's a good one she's going okay it looks decent grab the camera all right enough messing around look at this going now super happy that it worked okay okay okay where's my sticks where's my.
Sticks oh my goodness there's one six oh what a rush that is slick okay i'm uh not out of practice yet i gotta get some more wood on here actually that is not good.
Oh my goodness you're a good spindle and hearth good bow drill set so uh uh there you go nope back up.
Back so back up back stay no oh better practice with this since high school days water's almost boiled.
I'm just going to make a dehydrated meal because i couldn't catch fish not to save my life got to save my life beauty oh no we're good we're good we're good oh as well hey that's not for you that's not for you.
I'm not for you here go get this all right we're done we're done we're done i'm calling that boiled right right oh we're good we don't have to boil any more water look at that.
A little touch a little bit more and we'll call that good it's no fish you know i'm not uh i don't i haven't lost hope yet we might not eat one but we can still catch one.
Let's still catch one tonight after supper smells like pepper beef and rice it is we'll do that i got this warm fire on my back i'm gonna look out over my nice view i have all to myself.
I need my chakra actually it's really nice on the back have the warmth there it's pretty goldeny behind you guys beauty come here beauty come on over here look what's up right there.
Yes yes yes yes good girl ah well part of the reason for this trip was to see if the ice was out around here so i can go on a canoe trip this is just one lake i i parked uh at the put in and paddled out too and i'm at this site here.
You saw a little bit of ice on the lake there i actually had to punch through some on the way in but throughout the course of the day the wind blew it all to the end there and it's 90 of it's melted so i think it's a good sign it's time for me to go on my spring trout canoe truck.
So i think i'll i'll do that pretty soon once i get back another couple days i'll go what are you saying no no dog food kisses please thank you all right guys more of this and uh.
More looking out there and more having warmth on my back there's actually mosquitoes out so that's cool but really but i wanted to uh also set up this tarp see if i can do it in a different configuration the camp under tarp a.
Couple times before the bugs come out because i really enjoy camping out in front of a tarp sorry under a tarp having the fire in front of you just being able to look out seeing the sky feel more connected you don't feel so enclosed feel more out there with nature but that's not uh that's not going to be the case for.
Quite for quite a while after after the spring you know i mean all the way through summer even into fall it's buggy so i'm gonna take advantage of it while i can early spring camp under a tarp and i imagine the next camp i have.
It maybe i can squeeze one more under a tarp but i assume that i'll have to use a tent my canoe trip i'll bring both then i can choose supper was filling you know we're out on a very calm nighttime paddle got my line in the water but.
You know i wasn't even able to get over to this spot earlier this was all covered by ice got some decent color in the sky over to our left nothing too crazy but pretty nice i'll take it.
Nice crescent moon and the peepers are a peeping that's my favorite of all just checking out the situation or what two ducks nice foreign now.
So put some fat wood on there that's why it's so uh so ferocious right now alright come on beauty go here come on here come on girl good girl get here go.
Yes lay down good girl all right folks we're heading to bed it's gonna take a minute situated in here i'm sure beauty big stretch.
Well good morning slept pretty good it's like six almost i think and uh beauty stayed with me most of the night which is good she's here now so we're gonna get up maybe i'm gonna try a little bit of fishing and eat some.
Breakfast and get a fire going there's a lot of stars out last night loons kept going off i got up maybe three times to pee and i was up for a couple minutes each time it was nice my axe or sorry my saw blade had frost.
On it this morning beauty's munching on a bone i don't see any birch trees immediately around here the birch bark i got yesterday like i said was on the walk i went with beauty so just making some shavings up and.
These will go up nice and easy this morning for me uh my reel must be partly frozen it's hard to spin what are you crying about huh what come here come here what's up big girl what's wrong.
Good dog everything's okay this is what camping is beauty i'll show you all the frost in my canoe here frost stuff for frost that wasn't clear breakfast of champions the old fudge cliff bar you know.
And not just that warmed up by the fire oh she's done i crisped up the end of it even i don't know how good that'll be no beauty no beauty no beauty i'm not bad beauty down down.
Good down you can't have any of this this is chocolate she had two cans of food yesterday that's a treat and don't worry i have the cans right here i burn them clean them out.
I'm going to take them home with me i'm just gonna there goes the loon hey you saw that one just gonna finish eating here tear down camp wait for the fire to go down and head out ah you can get some breakfast at home.
That way you don't yak in the car kiddo all right guys thanks for watching hope you enjoyed it hmm all right you see that line in the water right there it's all black fly larva look it this is all black fly larva all of this look at it it's all.
It's all over the lake all of that stuff you see right there right there all that stuff it's all black fly larva oh my god that's insanity it's so billions billions oh my gosh we've got to go we got to go.
