Hey guys how you doing Joe here I got a special guest we got Jim Baird heyo from YouTube's Jim Baird Channel and histories alone so we got one winner of a loan and one loser we're gonna camp out tonight we're just looking for a specific spot to find somewhere but deep snow we have a cool shelter idea in mind so stick with us.
so we've come to this clearing here this is what we were looking for so we had deep snow we're in this little bit of a field we're thinking you know those survival manuals you always see you can take down into a tree it doesn't really look it doesn't really look all all that good to be honest like we'd have to trim.
I'd say we would trim on this side keep the backside pretty Froy and then have like dig down in the help maybe we can even build like a bank here of snow all around that would kind of help to perfect if the snow was this tall yeah I mean definitely but maybe we can just shovel all that snow up on top of it you know Nemea.
And just take all that I mean it's gonna be a lot more work but we're actually gonna have a shelter that'll keep us warm I think yeah I think so yeah like if we get in there and we leave kind of these bowels down here we get all those little sticks mm-hmm you know there's definitely a big area we can't even take out that tree it's not an issue at all.
Yeah I'm into it yeah okay cool we gotta go grab our sleds no that's right yeah we're on a scouting mission here we don't want to bring our sleds back without finding a good place to actually build the shelter Joe's idea very wise wise woodsman idea every now and then I would give that to you for sure thanks yeah you got it already looks like I've.
Done this one time before an intern oh pretty cool so yeah I like it it's a kind of thing that you hear about doing and you hear about skiers they'll be skiing in the fall into basically a hole where the spruce tree is and they get a little stuck in there they can't get out so this is basically what we're gonna turn into a good shelter and it's not.
Something you always hear people talking about it's not something actually see done much I've never done it so I think it's gonna be cool to try it out and sort of judge how it would work as a pure survival shelter it already looks like it's kind of cozy yeah definitely I'm in doing that that's about as technical as I got there that was very.
Technical all right we're gonna go get our sled we'll be back here in a hot minute this is what Jim was talking about earlier when you kind of treating fallen these are all actual trees just buried by the snow in here so all this a great next to them is very soft and sink Jim what look at the size of that tripod big.
Tripod for a big guy like hokey smoke of the tripod the bigger the bushcraft shelter yes exactly know what they say about guys a big feet they wear big shoes he is my Sherpa Sherpa Jim home sweet home basically going to maybe we put a bow bad in there - you're thinking I do yeah.
So I forgot my sled Jim was nice enough to let me throw my duffel bag on top of his I don't got much gear in there he brought the majority of it for us I'm definitely sweating the most yeah I don't have much on I do it long johns on those all right I'm gonna get my shovel out and I saw on my ass because that's the first thing you got to start doing.
Clearing off and digging out it's nice then you don't have to like fight the cold but I'll tell you the brutal fingertips and like do you undo the white one yeah yeah do you ever wish sometimes when you're tripping it's all not to perfect that you almost wish for crappy weather just to make like it more interesting for the video or for.
Whatever I am so extremely happy when I come home from a trip and I've endured hardships because that video makes it so I don't like like even that stranded thing with the forest fire I was like yeah I had the tonic no no come on as soon as you get in the plane elizacass it's gonna make some thought creep into my head.
It's like disaster strike so for those people who don't know Jim and his brother Ted one what was season four season four four of alone the brothers and there were those the the season where they teamed up you guys had to find each other right yeah well my brother was sort of stationary on the coast and I got dropped off about ten.
Miles away from him and I basically had to follow a compass bearing just surviving on whatever I could eat wild mushrooms slugs and like for eight days my brother and then once I found them we survived together for a total of 75 days and eating more or less fish bait and whatever was edible was technically I also like the grossest stuff.
Imaginable and managed to scrape off the wind so yeah I did learn a lot of interesting stuff about like what survival is really about and stuff like what kind of start explaining to you before about you know you think here you go out there with a plan a and you end up with plans ed you're right you know and then you start to realize I mean you.
Wish you're doing better you think maybe somebody at some time period would had the skills to do better but you do the math and there's only X amount of calories in your area and it becomes just a slow game of decline yeah a little bit a little bit you know but anyways yeah we'll get into that in more detail I'm super interested to hear.
About it too because my experience did not let me feel any of that I was just in and out but you're the worst they might as well have just like whipped you in a garbage dump who probably would have been better well I would have more to eat yeah I've got this little silky that I can kind of get in here in this tight spot with my.
Glasses I'm still just in case any of these no she's off soon but see now I imagine this is gonna be stuck into the ground somewhat Oh more than somewhat oh that's totally fine yeah just pull it over even yeah do that one of these look at yeah we're done the created a bunch of cities yeah see that's perfect for this hey.
Look this yeah I deal yeah should I go cut some more vows from around sure no yeah cuz we're gonna want so on the ground - I think any cool man it might be a little tight okay I just put some of my winter tie at my cabin tent it makes you smell so nice - right yeah possum is no good for that all right so it's coming along as you can.
See like there's a good space actually it's quite to good spaces knocked out here but check this out we got some decent firewood hidden way back in here you'd never get to it unless you're doing this so we're gonna get that piece of firewood out right now I'm super happy I brought my silky saw because it's making quick work of this in here.
The other side would work fine - it's less intrusive let me just get in and so not at all it's just real yeah it is no dough that looks decent like has some weight to it right oh there we go that's what might be a little bit punky that's alright.
do you think Jim it's all pretty much squared away as far as removing the branches that we need so we got some decent space in there yeah we got a lot of space so I think that's kind of like definitely gonna be good for a spot for us to sleep in there so now it's gonna be kind of using snow as insulation and.
Kind of using the branches and building onto the structure a little bit and doing some shoveling yeah what do you think we should probably some of these and that on top of their pile of snow on there to it okay yeah yeah I think so I almost wonder though if these would be better to use four on there to keep the snow in yeah yeah for sure maybe we use.
Both yeah yeah okay we can even just yeah that's not probably won't work won't do too much the twigs but I want you to imagine that these are the ticket yeah definitely wearing like bright blue all right so we're gonna get rid of these twice because general consensus is they're not gonna do it as good a job as the boughs to keep the snow on there.
We're not gonna shovel the snow out because it's pretty tamp down in there already and the fact of the matter is once you start shoveling snow out it's a good chance that you're gonna come to uneven ground anyway so we'll just build our ground up and make it even it's tough to oh my goodness I'll share some of that a clip of you of.
Me getting boughs or summer fat you know yeah we can do a little Google Drive thing yeah yeah our Drive yeah yeah I don't want to lose too much space you're right I think that we should like we don't need to throw snow like right up here right but if we pile it up to like here yeah cool yep all right cool because you see when you get in there.
And you look to the outside how there's kind of like like it could be the lights right here you know right yeah and then not even if we don't put snow on it yeah no it's good yeah then do it man I'm into it yeah there too too long and just so that one's nice short and thick it's like basically like a huge night more or less right well I guess that's what a.
Sword is too so you're allowed to bring like a fire steel on a loan right huh so me and my brother sourced fire steels that were like an inch thick and I seven inches long nice is it no we made like we use like mighty putty to make like huge grips and like Ren thinks it just looks so utilitarian the British guys like this is a bloody.
He's like we're changing the rules yeah like our firesteel was like literally you could have put it on the sock and knock someone unconscious right so my problem with mine was they were very specific on how much rope you could bring how much quarters you could break yeah so I was trying to do everything like super by the book and I didn't want.
To have any kind of lanyard on my be a useful cordage that yeah I had a picture of my family and I had it in a ziploc bag so it would stay dry and I even asked him to pose allowed to have the ziplock bag right meanwhile they're so they're so freaking a no vote meanwhile someone who will go unnamed hit a huge slab of birch bark inside his kind of.
Birch bark at from home and lined it with it and brought it and got away would have got away with it but some what he told me when I was riding him out oh yeah he tried to put a beauty bag in a sleeping bag and the same thing with Hotelling them till we'd have both two we write or more on that too so when when I got my I guess it could have just.
Been from other travel but we remember like whoa there's like maxi pads in it too so it's probably it's probably Mitch's bag check this out man this is looking real good now we got a bunch of vowels on there and I guess this is what you could do too if your spruce wasn't substantial enough in this shelter type of situation your snows not deep enough.
Your spoofs isn't substantial you can cut boughs and put on yeah like we're doing and this is very easy for someone to do like without even tools you could rip off boughs you know if you had to if you're in a situation is that I think a good way to say is it's not always like with the survival book show you a perfect case scenario definitely where.
You have this perfect snow cave around the Spruce oh we're having to use more boughs and snow to kind of create that perfect scenario you know indeed I think I run into that more times than not as you get out there and nothing's like how it looks in the book nothing's ever ideal no yeah very cool man I'm gonna go in there see if you.
Can see me hey it's warm I got my t-shirt on all right we got our snowshoes off now we've trampled enough snow down so that's always fun and in here we can walk fine where am I can you see me oh man it's it's spacious in here now I like it nope fire like home like home under a tree overnight bushcraft camp under a tree.
I'm into it there is looking pretty good that's my thumbnail right there and that's the back way in like chauvinist we less stressful all right so we're gonna build up a little mound this is already good looking good yeah and the snow can kind of sit on it as opposed to just falling through the falling through the cracks as it were like I did in.
School got me thinking I was like in school I was like I was always smart alright at least I thought it was oh yeah I was real bad in math real real bad yeah me too I don't know if I'm actually bad at math or whether it's just so boring yeah second very well be it it's like when I really would try to pay attention.
I actually figured it out but usually I'm like I'm trying and next thing you know I'm like staring out the window right well that bird looks like it's having fun so we're starting to be able to put it on top of the boughs now it's actually holding it pretty well so we're gonna start kind of maybe doing a little a little work to to build it up to kind.
Of create a bit of a wall I guess seems deep already over here to the snow is just deeper over here got a decent platform over here okay let's first cones row all right we're gonna go report we're gonna look on inside and report that son he's magnificent okay it's uh well that's hot man there's a wall there's a definite.
Wall two feet high ish the boughs and snow better than how it was for like it's at like it's not really honest to give us much protection just because it's so low yeah well like I think that we are super protective from above like it's it's bare there's barely any snow on the ground in here compared out there already and I don't even think it's.
Gonna snow tonight but it looks amazing yeah what a cool yeah yeah having a good time man like it's chill out here it's it's calm I just kind of good that we find me God Oh today yeah yeah there's been a long time wait we're gonna cut some cows for our floor in there now I think we're all.
Done with the building up on the sides it's got a build upper floor make it a little bit more even get up off the snow think Jim said he only has a small thermo like to build it up gonna find some spruce so around it's way way more battles than this oh this is perfect I can get a bunch of boughs from this one and I don't have to take them off a live.
Tree or take down a tree kind of like at the tent the other day when I was getting that log I was able to just take it off the ground like this there's been a lot that have snapped off this winter due to heavy snow loads and wind so if we look around it shouldn't be too hard to find some more of these two they're just small.
Bowels I'm getting off them but that's okay we're just trying to make a bed floor make it nice and soft anyway it's so packing that's saying something yeah but depending where you are at the bit to Depot or on the spot like home this would be for the kid totally definitely it's always deceiving then like three huge armfuls each and.
It's like I like these ones you got might have like half a tree with too much stock right here let's cuddle up yeah this is nice is it comfy like you could totally go all out and build it up course we could wrap a tarp around three sides wrap it around three sides and have this over here you'd be completely yeah and.
Close no concern from above right like if it was dead a winter right huh yeah and then this will be here too and get snowed on actually look at extra boughs and stuff right yeah yeah very cool that's what I meant to do yeah things are going pretty good we were being successful in gathering our bowels there's a lot of building going on check.
It out got decent amount of boughs and there it's starting look really cool back up and show you the whole thing I think we're gonna have to start getting some firewood soon Jim's gathering another big arm load of boughs come over on the other side and we do already have some wood but I found a nice dead standing piece of what looks to be maple.
It's definitely hard wood so we'll go on behind there and and grab that but even other than that from all the trimming up we've got this stuff so should be a nice night I am just so comfortable over here I'm talking like I can feel the Sun on my arms it's it's gorgeous gorgeous day alright let's go get that wood Sol and maple awesome.
You can see where I'm standing right here this is kind of like our doorway that's part of the reason we kept these limbs on is it obviously not doing anything for wind protection for us or snow protection there there are more or less to just have the illusion of an entrance and going this way that's all fine and anyway it's really not.
Necessary what's more necessary is which spot to have a fire that's close enough where we can sit on our gear relax cook and still be safe so I think what we're gonna do is remove these limbs and go up high and remove the limbs as high as it can so that we can sit here and put some more battles out here on the edge of our of our camp and then we'll.
Have the fire right out in front look at Sookie saw man make sure orcas are some people bashing silky saws about being easily breakable and I know they are you just have to know how to use them properly you don't go all the way to the end you just use see say you're Sookie saws this big you only go to this to the end there you.
Leave a lot of space at the beginning so you don't accidentally jam it snap it off but they are worth their weight man cut much much better than a Laplander no competition to the down to the down Jim's got wood alright so as you can see we cleared above now it's all clear away I believe I'm going to make a little bit of a snow.
Wall there in front for the fire so hard right here looks like it yeah that Punk will draw up uncle Bern after any funky yeah it's better than nothing yep this one I found though it's like a why stick hanging in the V of another tree and the bottoms are already cut off of it that might have been me yeah like maybe that's just the difference between me.
And you and height I think probably it is yeah you ever have those fires in the wintertime dig it down and you build a small fire then you end up laying longer pieces and the middle just sinks right down sizzles there's no coal right and the other side is just up on the wood it's horrible it's there it never works yeah the only way you do it is if you.
Laid a bunch of all Excite like yeah well it's like this and start on top you get it that that length from the get-go yeah and then what just kind of like leaned up against these trees I guess whoo yeah I'm thirsty you got water yeah all right we're doing pretty good as you can see everything's pretty much falling into.
Place our wood situation is pretty good shelters are awesome we built that back wall for the fire in about two seconds I think we're going to get a fire going to start melting some snow because we're both parched yeah that's what that brace is good for not smothering it leaning up against huge.
Winds kicking up we should go up no problem you got to protect that flame science yeah it looks good you can plot if you bend it up a touch better take there I think you're perfect right there that's some high high efficiency bushcraft bro back here ways so that Jim can go in the front his is much bigger.
Therefore more important can do more wood I mean sort of more water you're gonna get more water once it melts but also the snow is gonna be pressed hard against the bottom of the pot and it's less likely to melt the snow away and then create an area where the bottom of the puck gets too hot and it warps upon hmm because ideally when.
You're mouthing so you want to start with a little bit of water we don't have any because we chugged all because we're so thirsty so I just made sure I pack that down and they're really tight and then I'm gonna stir it and hopefully I don't burn the pot you ever done that before I have I have to definitely yeah and it was like my mom's fancy James.
Will be drinking water in no time Paul Bunyan making his toothpicks look at that well we've been cutting wood for some time now we're both ready for a break of sawing so we're gonna lay everything on top of it all in there after I got my top quilt from ug quick ugq outdoors again this is my like negative 18 so I'm gonna be toast and.
Toasted tonight and then my therm-a-rest NeoAir xterm it's getting to be suppertime so I got my ribeye I know it doesn't look great it looks kind of green that's it look green to you it's a little green little tinge anyways I know it's good so we're gonna put some steaks place on that baby Jim's working on the fire right now it's.
Hardwood coals going our stick is burning but yeah so pretty soon good steak rockin for suppertime we're losing light is probably close to 6:00 I would assume maybe a little bit before that but I'm getting hungry need to try to keep this away from dripping all my stuff oh yeah about a steak spice up in this tree.
Okay I'm just gonna put another one of these things through here I don't have to cover here so I got in my show - yeah no it's all though might be done there yeah doing film like it and then I'm gonna just I'm gonna just thread this bigger stick behind underneath all the little yes I made in there yep without trying to mangle it too much.
So I've done something very similar before with fish I put in the sideways and butterfly students yeah after like I'll stick it through the stick first and then put those stakes in after sideways to kind of splayed open nice same idea that's very similar do that it's gonna be awesome just straight heat hooking it yeah there.
You go look from the top and then from the bottom you shot there from the bottom then yeah okay so I mean I'm not right about what I was saying that big sticks not going through the look at all I was gonna no no it's not no it just goes under the other little so it's different what I do.
With fish but very cool what I do this is that what I hate about this thing if you compressing holy [ __ ] is out today damn not too shabby dude yeah it does the trick right no as cool as a girl but you know teach their own actually the grills ruining my my teachers primitive shot.
took me um 25 minutes to make this grill I was weaving full scientific proof of this but I like a whole multiple articles you google it really yeah I'm hundred percent serious yeah there's something in red meat that makes you less depressed I would be yeah happier I would be rather how happy are you right.
Now for example I'm ready to free this is a bone-in it's not the Tom Harper he's still a little bit of bone in there see how it is I'm sure I cooked it too long like I always do but that's alright oh yes definitely cooked it 200 the fat was beautiful beautiful thing we're all it's so good so good Jim still cooking his his was up a.
Higher up than mine on the fire probably cuz I took all the good real estate oh you got it how's it working out for you you got some rice to cook up to but go get this meat into us always I never want to fight in a cast-iron pan I just lose the fire boom you know and bacon - bacon over the fire is always really.
Good with the hardwood yep I don't know what time it is now it's gotta be probably around nine or ten we just been burning wood slowly we're probably nearing the end oh look at that dude we can cut some more oh we got some more over that a little more wood for sure yeah but it's getting late and we're having a fun time just hanging.
You know talking planning for future trips even warm very comfortable out here it is it's I don't even have a global zone I can't believe how warm with it when you're by the fire all right and this little Wow this little backdrop is holding up pretty good too actually yeah so I think we're gonna get to bed.
Pretty soon but don't worry I definitely will keep you guys with us let you know what we're doing when we're doing it but other than that we're just hanging up by the fire just telling lies my stories have been true for the moment I don't think so well folks it's about 10 o'clock it's about time to head in they got a lot of.
Snow a lot of snow on my gear over here that's some long johns and a puffy jacket oh and a change socks that's all I'll be doing before I go to bed everything else will be fine but yeah even your baby is just packed with ashes oh I'll bring it over here and show you Jim's baby it's super lightweight.
Efficient a cargo pocket but other than that I think it's time to go to bed tonight I'm actually looking forward to going to bed I'm actually looking forward to quarter laying in my bed and being warm and sleeping what about you Joe no ants are perfect your stuff in your face over there I mean some food the.
Harvest of course of course so yeah that's Jim's Danny super lightweight probably still nylon I'll show you in the morning huh small impacts up to well here is our camping underneath a tree over a bush cramp Bush cramp you ever get the Bush crabs oh snap all right guys I'm turning in I'm.
Turning in it's bedtime all right oh my job yeah nightmare Jimbo you know your folks we're headed to bed we're gonna get up in the morning cook some bacon and stuff so we'll keep you with us but a warm night sleep is anticipated for sure yeah go tonight and oh good morning how you folks doing you Sonny.
You slept good in sub world yeah really good it's like 8 o'clock in the morning maybe even past that so we pass out around 10:00 last night I would say that is a pretty good sleep out in the woods but the thing is with the with the baby bags as you can see see the frost on it the ice actually then that gets soaked right when you warm it up so the big.
Bags are good for things like this for one night where it's like protected you're not worried about poking a hole in your bag or you see them kind of stuff but like for an extended thing you wouldn't really want to be doing it unless you could dry your stuff out right like we could we can hang this up in the in the sunlight in the today and.
Maybe it'll dry out a bit it probably would actually today the other thing you could it's just it's just condensation though yeah definitely I wonder how much I wonder how much that condensation is just coming from your body like a lot of it if you had a liner in your bag maybe it wouldn't be so bad in your but in your city bag inside your.
Sleeping bag I think I think it might not be so bad but for me it's too hot man yeah the liner for unless it's like minus 40 I just get too sweaty so I don't know it's like my first time sleeping with a baby bag and I felt like a little breeze come through and it definitely keeps more your heat it keeps you heated a hundred percent but yeah it.
Like it so like I breathed underneath here and a sweat from my feet so I know that like the bottom of this would be soaked too right but yeah it's definitely just condensation yeah all right well we're gonna get up and see what the day brings yeah Jim's got like a six-hour drive or something so we're gonna hang here for too long but we'll.
Keep you with us for a little bit I'm sure that's good it's good it's good to have a conversation like that in it so Jim was just saying something to his camera that I thought sounded really good and I wish I had said to you folks something along the lines of like winter camping doesn't always need to be this daunting.
Thing you know what I mean um some people don't go into camping because I think it has to be this big mission and like you don't have to be super crazy mindset and really the reality of is issue if you have a good shelter like Jim said if you have adequate sleeping gear and and know what you're doing access a fire a little bit um it's not.
That hard you know I mean we had a lot of fun on this trip there was never any really times where we were like worried for our health or too cold or anything like that so it's just we were we were lucky with the weather too but we both denoted negative 1 in negative 40 weather right like we've done it and that's doable - anyways the point of the.
Story is go outside don't be scared just be see your boots light breeze there we go beautiful morning check out the frost on my bag that cross tan lines baked Hanlon oh man she dead yeah I guess we did go to bed at 10 o'clock.
Yeah nothing there wind it pick it up thing we don't need that stick anymore I did not realize how quick stirring it how much stirring it does I had no idea this is groundbreaking for me damn its days water.
Yeah and a conservative top of the fascist and you can serve the most stove got right good call man yeah damn it's not mandatory you know oh of course not but look it's [ __ ] really did something so sometimes when you're boiling snow water you get a few particles this probably has about a full pine cone in it and you can kind of keep.
Them out a bit while you're pouring it when you take a good look at this you fine it's all you got to do that's it it's ready to go spring water yeah but little particles you don't look probably I don't know maybe the best to drink but a couple of them listen they're not gonna kill you they don't.
Haven't you already I know it's just snow it's just distilled water and what you can do is you can just pour it through a coffee filter or something like that you want to get down to there or you can just do the fire wrap it the backwoods multi-tool more texture to it this way give your fiber in yeah all right guys.
Well we're gonna get out of here let's say thanks to Jim for coming at a good time absolutely so we will I'm sure you guys will see us together again we're both gonna be at canoecopia in March you know the dates March no okay perfect Google COO copia to find out the dates if you want to come meet Gemini we'll both be there for all three days.
Yeah absolutely looking forward to it all right see you guys in the next one
