and I as we search for a hidden frozen lake, in hopes to pull some specs through the ice. We snowshoe through 4 feet of powder over the course of 6 hours.
Things did not go according to plan, and we needed to make an impromptu emergency camp, the temps got down low, -20c at night, and around -10c in the day.
Come along with us to get the full story on what happened and how we dealt with a possible survival scenario by building this dual survival shelter.

we get in there oh yeah so we come off the old ski trail onto some powder that's a bit harder going I'm not so bad nice fluffy stuff Boosh why don't you tell the people what's going on today what are we doing well today we're on the Voyager trail and we're snowshoeing.
In on top of a boat four feet of snow and we're going into nice lake to spec some fish some speckled trout and have a camp and have some fun what do you think the duration of our hike is till we get to our camp spot I figured we have at least another hour maybe hour now we were going for what high fire not even 45 yeah so we had some tarps obviously.
We both have our sleds and we're relying on fire for cooking and warmth tonight I'll set up some tarps near a rock hopefully a big rock outfit oak cropping I'm open so yeah that would be ideal we've got some shovels so we can dig out some snow beds or benches and dig down to the ground should be a good time it's negative when I was driving here in the.
Car it was negative 20 what was in the high today negative seven negative and then tonight so we're decked out we got good enough sleeping bags everything be fine Boosh how tall do you think that staff is you're holding four feet right let's show the people huh what the snow situation is.
No joke a girl being graceful we have to this is on the quote-unquote trail we're supposed to be following so we got to clear that off before we get there with our sleds yeah I think that's pretty good yeah I think so good just skirt the skirt on through there neat indeed good job goosh look this used to be a tree I did.
Open up quite a bit I keep coming to this just been like ice storm after snow SAR as you can see little twins with huge amounts of snow on the the loss of snow never ate snow don't you still got deep oh my is that oh it's fun I might be able to go first impacted I might not push through.
Now you cool your little later yeah well do that work it work no nothing stuff stuff your shoulder there you go Oh prop stick this did mine oh look how much snow I'm carrying this is no joke it's 2 o'clock now we came out here like 10 yeah get him there though this is what's in front of us.
We're at the top of a big hill oh sure - just know it's taking us a lot longer than we thought that was gonna take to get into here we've been going all day it's just turned 3 o'clock have Sun at the most until 6:00 I have light vague late until the most till 6:00 and we still have to go back down and get bushi sled like you.
Just saw a skip and get mine up here 500 meters to Lake with that boat that and the 500 meters going the way we've been going takes a while you know breaking trail I'm knocking ice off trees so we can get through the trail so it's gonna be a mad dash for wood the ice fishing is probably gonna be like holes drilled after we already set up or well before.
We set up and just leave the rods there because we don't really have time for for much weed snacking along the way but water my mouth doesn't really wanna work too much water is a necessity it's a lot of work it is alright well we gotta go gotta get going here we have to get going we're running out of time.
So obviously didn't make it to Lake but how to make an executive decision how far did you hike down still didn't see it probably another 500 meters six per here's Bambara calculations we should be there roughly around that time you still didn't see it so it's uh ten after four were losing light she's just no option we can't head back that's way too far we.
Can't find the lake we can't explore for the lake any further because we're not gonna have any time to a dig down make a camp and be collect enough firewood to cook our food and at least warm us until until it's time to go to bed like I said we both have adequate gear to keep us warm we couldn't literally stop on the side.
Of the trail set up our stuff and be fine we have Vivi's adequate sleeping bags everything but what fun is that I wanna be able to sit by the fire and cook some food too right so that's why we're stopping where we are we really should have done this trip in a to night adventure to night time frame because the first day could have been getting.
There the first day was trying to get there right we took a whole time hiking and pulling these sleds big difference when you're when you're hiking or when you're snowshoeing or Stosh we pull his sled full year so anyways we're making progress on a little dug out here dig down maybe set a tarp up maybe even not depending but we.
Have a back rest we will have a front fire reflector of spot down here to have our fire so it doesn't just like my last video kind of grow out and then you'll have to deal with it after but there's a lot of dead firewood dead dead firewood there's a lot of dead hardwood so should be alright yeah close if we have synthetics maybe just make a little kind.
Of a B there we have the fire there and then yeah and then it's almost half Quincy right now like if we put one on top my other ones really big we could just laid in here on this and we won't have to worry about any of the snow or the tarp going down and just kind of trap the heat yeah all right all right pull the knee walls here well you want.
To do this I'll go get wood sure yeah sure yeah all right I saw there's a wicked one which is a Lodge between a few live trees they're at Stan Park on or anything okay I saw that all right that sounds like it makes sense all right all right divvy up the chores I'm gonna get my tools and get some firewood boo she's.
Gonna continue digging this thing out frozen he's good all right one small piece fire time oh don't off my camera over Wow trapped on the dome.
Well as out collecting firewood bouche was nice enough to set up this large tarp shelter I'm gonna have lots of coverage down in that pit he died but he dug so we're gonna or fight fire pit there little wine itself out but that's a good three four feet there then we got and sleep front to back or head to toe I mean I don't know fire there so I got.
Four firewood that stuff on that side which is not really that much but then over here I got all these guys so it's time to cut these up in about three or four foot pieces and see if we have enough looks decent and yeah we don't have that much time until the sun's down so should be pretty good place and cozy in there though man once you got the.
Fire like that that that all needs to be tucked up still obviously but lots of protection and then the heat should fall in underneath the tarp and keep us extra warm we've been having crows fly around us all day and keep hearing them different different noises that maybe a little shorter to start out a piece of soap.
well burn after we have a good fire oh yeah it's already warmer down here than 20 degrees body heat so all of our firewood is all cut up it's time to you know the sleeping gear and if we still have some time after this I'm gonna put the snowshoes back before it's dark and.
Put the snow shoes back on and hike crowd for a little bit more wood but if not we have enough and we can make it last but I thought I'd show you guys just what we brought to stay warm in these cold temperatures now moving all day we did create sweat but we didn't fall into the snow quite a few times so I know personally my back the back of my.
Legs where the snow is getting kicked up and getting stuck here is all wet from it melting so boo she's got ice all over us everywhere so it's a good idea to be able to get warm again right and be dry so having the adequate gear and this time tell me where is probably a pretty important thing all right which side you want there okay I'll take this side so.
We can use our sleds as a little bit of like a side wall for it for wind or even a something to sit on or a back brace lots of options I chose to bring my gear in a duffel bag which I normally do when I'm winter camping and easy access it holds a lot my sleeping pad right so for myself for.
Sleeping gear while we're both using therm-a-rest I've got a third firm rest NeoAir X term and boo she's using my thermos NeoAir that one I've had for like 10 years and she's going strong that's like a far-our value of five or something like that to put everything inside for me I have a bivy this is an old REI baby a minimalist grab this for.
Like a hundred bucks maybe fighting all four or five years ago Doug had it for a while when he bought his cocoon of death Bibby and now I have this one back what's sleeping bag you rocking that's C Chinook let's see I'm not sure what it is it's great great at negative ten and then I got a cheapy from the states that's rated to negative 18 Celsius have.
You stuff inside each other and maybe Anna Bibby sack to right and that's the same thing I'm doing I have my negative 20 and then I have like a negative like two or three here what is this one native to the Phantom spark from Mountain Hardwear so I've got stuff them inside each other and then that rating goes through the roof three more than.
Warm in this stuff pulling a sled lets you carry like this stuff's not all heavy right like it's all down but it's very bulky so pulling your stuff in a sled you all your gear in a sled is it's helpful for the winter time except for when you're hit trudging uphill all day both ways four feet of powder you didn't break trail.
Most of the day though I appreciate that though for all the frog all right and I got a pillow can't leave home without it all right we're gonna get camp set up I'll get back with you aha too soon up stuff together all right we are losing light big time you see the Sun behind or the moon.
Behind me maybe it's a full moon so we'll get some good moonlight tonight but Sun is it done we were able to get a couple more big pieces of wood which is great and I've got a bunch of dry stuff to start the fire you got some of these balsam fir that are wide but at the bottom we're a little dodgy so we're gonna put them at.
The bottom of the fire as our platform she'll build it up quite high and give us a good head start kaboosh here I'll start bringing our firewood over here I guess I have to walk do my let me just get this thing lit there's a rack and the whole corn action.
Snowshoes off is about the second best thing I can think of doing right now oh yeah first is getting some food eating some food that doesn't come in bar or nut farm not gonna roll I got class in for all frost a little bit of fire a little bit of nylon on the ground I'll call it home.
Okeydoke so to start off tonight's feast I got someone good old Amy's organic soups this one's a vegetable barley she's low in fat vegan low beep non BPL I think I put it sitting low b.p a life for the best of the best but anyways I've been eating these soups with no bad repercussions actually I feel pretty good and having some healthy.
Healthy regular things going on so no need to put water in that one has the pop top nice and easy I do have a bunch more food but we're gonna pace ourselves and eat eat over the course of a couple hours here before I go to bed so I'm just gonna throw this on get a slow cook on that and then yeah nibble have a little nibble on that I got some onion.
And garlic and Bruce brought some potatoes got a small steak that we can split I'm not gonna have too much of it but it's organic grass-fed steak as well so all as well for the morning this is what I've been eating in the mornings it's quick Kia Huia I'm not sure how to say it no sugar or salt added you sweeten it to.
Taste I had fruit I had blueberries oh yeah I just had this on the last trip I added apples to that but normally I have blueberries or banana and the 36 grams of whole grains per 38 gram serving that's crazy soup he's done you got some soup on too or you don't.
Yeah I got some soup going well mr. noodles soup fish yeah all right yeah she's done nice oh-ho how did they come out and round like that was it o-o what's that it wasn't a like bowls and then I seemed sighs that cups I just threw it in there right only took a couple minutes nice got a good fire going you know melt some snow after I.
Eat this I still have like maybe a tiny bit of my Nalgene I did better on drinking water today those are moving a lot we needed to I was eating snow along the way quite a bit - actually I know they say don't do that but I think if you only do a little bit don't roll on it's not a big deal I'm pretty comfortable be cold at all oh.
No believe it the only thing I'm cold is my toes but I didn't switch off my boots or my soft yet I did put on long johns when we got here I didn't want to hike in them I don't want to sweat but I do have extra socks to change into and this sleep system tonight is gonna be heavenly man I know it mattress so this isn't what we had planned but I'm having.
A lot of fun this feels like real camping to me now we know that Lake is much farther or much harder to get to maybe we can come back and do a day hike there and break the trail and then if possible if it's not so far come back with the sleds another day because after how long we only brought a troffer I want to say like one quarter of this.
Hike not even and then we were breaking trail the whole way just so much longer than the winter than the summer right anyways it's good I'm fun feel feel at home now you're here it's a makes a huge difference put some water boiled up top my lentil soup didn't rinse it out cuz you know it.
Froze in there just waters this water boils in a little frozen on the sides so let's let's add the great great water to the clear Nalgene Oh some despair for my next the next little melt not so bad little Ensley mentally well BAM dug the stinks got to be done I just flipped it but.
all righty very tasty especially right next to the bone mmm nice char personally I like the crispy bit our fire rocking dude boom boy I'm gonna smell some iron a really soul guard I'll show you a spire nice and relaxed we are chillaxing let's.
Take tea soon to have garlic potatoes onions not too shabby well bouche Wow it's ten o'clock at that time it's about that time I think we're gonna just organize our stuff and head to bed we're both beat from hiking in here all day pretty warm from the fire it's uh doing this job definitely but these sleeping.
Bags are calling our names nice and warm in there and comfortable so I won't get with you guys in the morning we will get with you guys in the morning have a good night think warm thoughts good night Bert temper is right well how you hug well how'd you do not too bad stay warm that's good yeah I still really warm to.
8:00 in the morning so we definitely slept in I slept hard till 3:00 about compete a couple times Bush said he felt something walking in the snow behind it's decently heavier what yeah yes I like even almost human tracks or something feel the snow shaking I don't think decide it I'd rather it not be humid for sure yeah.
Cold cold cold cold my hand is numb touching the camera the fire did its thing it warmed us up it melted a big old pit there my stuff see see yours too I'm sure no smartphones no burns no melts the tarp above us got a few spark holes but boo she's cool with that it's no big deal you know so the agenda for today it's family day so we have to get.
Home to our families we definitely and did not anticipate it taking this long to get into even where we are now we thought we would have been attic attic add somewhere to camp what like an hour two hours into the hike yeah and it was so but we did break trail and we're hoping that the way out the way up the way in was all uphill right like 90%.
Uphill oh we're coming up into the hills to go down into the lake and we we broke trail uphill so now we can just kind of slide downhill is is the general consensus so hopefully we get out in maybe two ish hours but I'm really glad I like last night I was like man let's just bail you know I mean let's come back for a gear whatever and then Boosh.
Sensibly talked me out of that and we set up and it was fun like I'm glad we did I if I was bought myself I would have bailed and come back but I'm glad I'm glad we stayed I had a fun time this is like a really cool shelter you whipped up we really busted our butts he got into gear when we got when we when we Bush came back from that hiking that.
Like 500 meter hike or whatever looking for the lake and when he came back and then fine I was like we seriously need to talk now and he's like yeah I know it's like we either need a bail or build shelter and when we decided this is the spot we're gonna build the shelter we really really stepped it up.
Boosh got is shovel hunt and I got all that wood and yeah man this is the most one of the most comfortable winter nights I've spent what about you I think I think it is for sure besides maybe that one time your snow tracker but that was much earlier yeah alright guys well I hope you this was a an interesting video for you I know it.
Wasn't the length that I normally do and it wasn't really the most in-depth thing but you've seen all that before and this is definitely different different for me this is an impromptu unknown shelter spot and lone camp overnight so yeah could have been a if we didn't have as much gear as we did to have to stay logged luxurious we were saying last.
Night could have been a survival situation yeah you're literally in a survival vivy right now but we did pre slip but we did have our gear and we we had I know we had more than enough adequate gear to stay warm and good and that's that's the key so I'll probably film a little bit walking out but I think this is mainly the end of the.
Video if you want to stick around and watch our antics trying to get on out of here might be a little amusing a couple of things go check out my Instagram I stay very active on there I have lots of cool fun stuff on there more family stuff humorous stuff I have merch I have new mugs oh so I'll put the link in the bio go check that out please and I'm.
Going to be doing a series a lter build series where I go out almost every day and build some like what a half an hour long video and and put it up pretty pretty currently pretty what's the word my hands burning from touching this put it up in succession pretty quickly it's not gonna be on my properties can go in the middle of the woods alright guys.
Thanks for watching say bye Boosh good bye oh my goodness we had to give this warming player going packing up touching the cold material really does a number on your hands so this little warming fire ah I'm roasting a melt trying to melt my Clif Bar it's working anyways this is.
Doing a lot for me at least almost all done through the size of that footprint we made oh yeah she's decent that back wall is legit to man to man said
