With me and we are up in wabakini mike's never been up in this area so we're gonna spend about eight days here traveling around paddling portaging fishing camping taking our time taking it easy and spending some time out here together  this is sort of a last-minute.

Decision we've been planning to go to woodland caribou for about four months almost since our last winter trip really that's right and then um well it's on fire right now there's three one big fire in the north and two in the middle so our route was literally running the gauntlet between.

Them so they the first thing we came across there was a fire ban we found that on wednesday so we immediately then we decided to start changing and then the next day they canceled our route so we couldn't have gone regardless of the fire situation or not we thought a little bit about bringing like a.

Stove or whatever but i mean once it closed the road yeah we couldn't go so we're here there's no fires there's no fire ban scenery is pretty similar i guess i'll find out but bruce hooked us i called i called about coming through with like one day notice and told him we were kind of screwed and.

He said come on up we'll figure something out for you so big shout out to bruce again i don't think we have much plans for today we're gonna go pretty slow no maybe one four times we gotta look at the maps again you know ease our way into it and uh relax this is gonna be a nice.

Relaxing trip me and mike have a tendency to bust our butts on trips and this is gonna be different than that this is the actual biggest spider in canada right here right now he's got a dragonfly and look at the girth of his body.

Holy smokes i'm jealous so there's a chance of thunderstorms today there's some blue in the front and blue in front of us in the sky but pretty dark over that way this guy all right so we've been battling the wind.

And we pulled up behind this island to take a break and i've trolled whoa since we got here but i just took a cast with the little spoon i've been using troll and i got hammered a little pike first pike of the trip  get a hold of him.

Get a hold of him joe silly boy bam pike very very windy in the headwind beautiful in here i was hoping to do some fishing in this creek but it seems like it might be a little too shallow but we'll see once it opens up into the actual lake proper.

Or the river i think we're on the river now a little current a little current right here right here's the fish right here battling some crazy wind for most of the day it's not too bad in here has been keeping the bugs down which is.

Great we're at a good spot where if this fish is decent to eat i'm going to keep it no more portaging or relatively close for our campsite yeah i think it's a walleye just a little guy oh not bad but skinny.

I will probably let him go in search of a couple in search of a bigger one either that or we'll keep him and look for another we'll make our minds up here in a minute i do have a stringer maybe what do you say mr walleye as you can see.

The gear explosions have happened we found a really nice sight we've been here for a little while i've gone swimming we uh just just been sitting and chilling it's uh it was a it was a pretty windy battle today so anyways go check out the site and uh there's a trail we.

Saw i'm gonna go check that out too who wears mustard pants you got all the colors of the rainbow on this trip red and yellow pants blue shorts ketchup and mustard boys are back this is all labrador tea all this nice.

Huh he doesn't want to break so easy okay oh we got one anyway so the trail didn't really go too many places i think maybe it's just for where people go from the camp to get wood or to the loo as mike was saying.

We got firewood though so that makes the trip worthwhile firewood for days um so easy oh brought his purcell trench grill look at that flat as the dickens we've.

Got our little small walleye our small eye for an appetizer because we hit up thunderbay's finest and got a couple of these bad boys for the first night because that's what the boys do ketchup and mustard boys all right.

First course sports parts what's up what'd you put on it hopping out sweetheart right now cholula pretty windy on and off here so i'm uh i'm gonna go in the old hammock tonight it's pretty hot out as you can tell.

My short shorts and uh it's nice and breezy in there so it's all at home i do have my tent but i'll use that another night i have come to love the hammock appreciate the hammock you know.

I'm happy to be out here with mike nice to have a buddy out with me camping all right get this ugq tarp up loving the ugq lately wind the wind is back no wind uh all right.

I'm sweet home it's so windy oh my so windy all right round two steaks with steak spice and mustard once the ketchups oh it's the ketchup pretty nifty grill certainly helps with it.

Long so we'll drop it again joe drop it again smells good oh yeah this looks so good yeah that's a soft steak  well we are going to do more than just.

Eat on this trip i promise you that but it's a very windy day as i've mentioned so it's about 8 o'clock now 8 30. oh there you go we are still just trying to take shelter from it it's not slowing down so tomorrow's supposed to slow down a.

Little bit more i think what we're going to do is take it easy tonight sleep in tomorrow start the day a little late and move a fair distance we are supposed to get north wind tomorrow again in the head or headwind.

About half of today half as strong yeah so we'll definitely be able to move to name a game out here win win win win that's pretty sick  we've got two big kevlar bags full of food this.

Got some food in it another kevlar bag with some food some food here after my last trip i was pretty happy with my food stuff but the only thing i really craved was bread and like not flat bread so this time i brought these flat bread hamburger patty type things sorry hamburger bun type things flat.

Hamburger buns and you can use them in half like a pita almost i've been putting peanut butter on them today that's my plan for the trip for lunches i'll have meat stick cheese and those with peanut butter on them and then some raisins for a snack i want to do a for dessert i want to do a little bit bigger of meals this time than snacking so much.

We'll see how that works out for me just give my stomach a break in between foods last trip i was snacking all the time but anyway it's only day one we'll figure out how it goes those breads man that's a big plus for.

Now we originally were gonna come for nine nights but when we switched over here it changed to eight just because of the logistics of it so we still planned for like 10 days worth of food we'll only be out here for only we have here for eight nights and then we get picked up pretty early i think.

Nine nine in the morning on the ninth day so we have abundance of food and fish living like kings out here what time is it mike 10 40. i'm going to bed yeah me too still lighting up out here to do whatever you want.

Read without a headlight all right well you heard the man almost 10 40. good day yeah night one we uh we had a soft start soft start into the wind yeah should be gone by tomorrow night we'll see you in the morning.

Just watering patting down the old hatches she looks like a mighty she's she's proud up there though  all right guys we're under the tarp going to bed in the old hammock see you in the morning well it's 11 a.m we're just getting.

Packed up to get off this site but we had it uh already planned out we were gonna sleep in and take our time here so the uh winds are calming down a little bit right now but they're still gusting pretty bad in the way that we need to go but.

That's all right not too far to travel today probably about the same amount of time or distance rather we traveled yesterday and we had plenty of time at camp yesterday so we're good we'll take our time getting there no rush we got one portage and maybe have to.

We have to line our boats through some uh shallow water we'll see how it is once we get there slept well stayed nice and warm although this morning i can't lie a little chill a little chilled went for a dip and uh.

Never really recovered but i'm sure once we get on the water and start moving it'll be more than warm how'd you sleep mike it's good yeah 12 hours no 10. it was good it was really windy we were staying out here so there was a lot of wind whipping up.

It did rain a little bit which it wasn't really supposed to but i think it was just drips or we just imagined it but yeah we're ready to go this is pretty much what we got for the day this 10 gusting.

Gonna get a little bit warmer but not much i'll take it that would have been a bad forget is that mine me i did that last trip and had to double back quite a bit at least it's not that far it could have been real bad.

Trying to get me watching me fall well if it's gonna happen i might as well get on over a week it's probably gonna happen once keep that camera ready okay so we are headed from the boiling sands river into smooth rock lake.

This is actually our only portage of the day smooth rock is pretty long and winding so it'll take us a while we're still going to the wind um this portage is not marked well none of them here are not by sign or by distance it's either.

Axe blazes or this one was just obvious right before a little set of rapids there's a off spot on the trail it's about a 500 meter portage not too bad relatively flat and pretty well maintained get out onto a big big lake.

After this portage there she is the beauty blue big beauty blue we'll be on that for a couple days all right first and only portage of the day complete it looks like a nice lake look at that shoreline just beauty soft.

Rock some grass over there that's a little bay but we're gonna stop uh stop right here for some lunch this is a gorgeous lake the wind is down everything's coming up milhouse everything's coming up ketchup and mustard pants well this site turned out to be really.

Nice bruce has it marked as a good campsite on the map and it certainly is a good view from around different spots and uh two campsites a few tent pads here spots for a tent at least you full yeah well i'm still eating yeah wow you.

Got access i uh we ate lunch i got this old croc uh strong cheese it's australian cheese it's supposed to be like pretty nice or whatever and i i just opened it today for the first time and like the rind on it we think.

Had just gone to sludge like melted and it was the goopiest gelatinous mess ever so i tried scraping off eating a couple pieces but it just seemed like danger cheese so lunch consisted of meat stick and peanut butter on the flatbread uh.

Blends which i'm really starting to like and i'm sprinkling like gorp on top of that and some dehydrated kiwis which is a huge win in my book and some lemonade but like i said it's 3 p.m now we're just super.

Relaxed relaxed to like the extreme extreme relaxing it's called it's a new x games we got a head soon we get to paddle south for a little bit now so we're gonna hopefully not have to have a headwind for a little and then we come around to bend and we're in the last stretch is a headwind but that's all.

Right we're going to camp at spaghetti isle old spaghetti island did you bring your chianti or did not this is the story of the mustard pants he was friends with the ketchup kind of guy.

You can see here the uh the trees are relatively young and they're all the same size and age so that means there was a fire here probably 30 roughly 30 40 years ago this whole spot's like this this whole spot it's been like that we haven't seen any burn though.

And we have seen a lot of mature forest different than the start of my last trip we're getting there just uh gonna round this big island and then head to spaghetti island which is right behind a nice small smaller island should be a nice campsite pushing 5 15 now it's been a great day shy on the fish.

Front i only caught one decent pike i've been trolling throughout this big lake we're in not even a bite but that's okay we have a ton of food that we need to eat anyway so we don't just keep carrying it around for nothing tonight is spicy.

Italian i believe or cabaret's sausage with beans sausages and beans nice musical meal the more you eat the better you feel heading into the wind that way that's gorgeous in here it's gorgeous back i see spaghetti on.

All right this one what that one my finger looks so long what do you think yep okay spaghetti aisle yeah it looks good to me there's a few dead standing like mike said there's some driftwood so.

Should be pretty pretty good we go go find the main entrance and uh we'll we'll show you how she looks go check it out there is another campsite down that way but this is totally sheltered from the wind and it's on an island and uh yeah we'd like to camp here it's a.

Little windy on this side here i'm gonna set up my camp on the other side of the island i think  it's not that uh not that favorable there's not really much going on  tonight might be a tent night for me i.

Don't know if there's a really good spot for me to hang my hammock with the tarp and everything that's okay  sorry about that my lens was fogged up i don't know why should look better now.

This side of the island is nice and calm blocks the window a bit bonus blueberries ripe too or almost almost right  very very tasty so our options are uh this side was just blazing hot in the sun.

With pretty much no shade or the other side with which is wind i believe we can fit two tents over there and the wind probably will die down  what do you say mike you think that's an option or you want to check the other spot out or what no i don't think i.

Don't find anything better than this with the wind if we get down there we're stuck we ain't coming back okay sounds good so you still like this tent yeah still good nice five or six years now matches your pants.

Mine matches mine don't worry if you watched my last series you know that my sleeping pad got a hole in it rather a line in it i think i rolled up some sand when i was rolling it up in the middle and it abraded i had it for a long time but anyways.

It was an opportunity to get a new sleeping pad so i bought myself a climate insulated v ultra light the thing's quite a bit longer than it needs to be it might be longer than my tent but i didn't have too many options not everything is open or was open when i bought it anyways.

It's got a pretty cool valve i'll show you here all right so this says press here to flip and this is deflate this flips around you see that oh press here to deflate it flips around then you inflate it on this side.

This is the worst part of a camping trip  so it's better i already blew it up once it's better than the therma rest as far as it doesn't take as long to blow it up and it's got these this v pattern to it hence the name where the baffles.

Are kind of like a negative space where your sleeping pad or sorry your sleeping bag fills in because when you're sleeping on sleeping bag it crushes the down and it doesn't give it give you any warmth anyway so with these these indents in the baffles the idea is it stays lofty in there so that's not too bad and on this trip i.

Have an under quilt and a top quilt so i will lay my under quilt underneath and i'll have my top quilt for the top or vice versa whichever but it's a it's a versatile setup that i brought between the hammock the underquilt top quilt the tent and this it's all very small and it wouldn't.

Be i wouldn't carry it if it wasn't worth it to me in my opinion so anyways new stuff for joe new way of thinking i do like to lay down in my tent before i peg it in just to make sure it's as flat as i'm gonna be able to get it.

Throw the old pad in there and try and do that at the same time test it out i don't know how long it is oh shoot that's what am i talking about what am i talking about not too many bugs at this site which is amazing not too many bugs at all today i think the cool weather.

Took them away oh it's not very flat at all not very flat at all  makes a squeaky noise too  well we might be looking for a different spot that sure is warm in there though.

So    they are spicy sicilian day two not day five mom my mom told me not to eat day five five day old meats so.

We're good stuff  didn't your mother ever tell you that went down quick oh yeah the last half hour it's only 10 o'clock i just it feels like almost as dark as it was for like 10 45 last week well in case the wind picks up.

Mike brought a big ol axe not big but big as far as canoeing goes for the trip and we have not used what's that got the old foot axe we haven't even taken the axe mask off but i had a guy in the comments ripping me a new one for calling an axe mask he's.

Like just call it a sheath like normal sorry sir i thought that was the name i thought that's what it was called sir the old foot axe is dull oh this is not gonna go wrong at all oh yeah got him skills look at those skills bro it's like you've been out in the woods for.

Two days i live out here michael beckwith mike and i are just laughing a boat there's like maybe three mosquitoes kicking around it's probably what 1103 is the worst it's been all day long for bugs this is june july 6th.

In northern ontario bush middle of nowhere nobody's around at all for hundreds of kilometers three mosquitoes and we're complaining good night too good night too how cold cold well it's quarter after 11 at night.

Believe it or not i don't go camping though you know no camping for this guy just green screening it all up 12 days the nine days deep you know quarter after 11. pokey smokey still bright get a rip rubber.

I'm having a good night what do you think i know i know this is the first week in july i have like a merino long underwear hood on fleece jacket it's good though we found the fourth and fifth mosquitoes.

So we're still complaining about those yeah we've been super lucky with the bugs the first day was a little rough on a couple of the portages but since then we've had almost none hopefully that continues but nice it's funny man quarter after 11 we're sitting here just you could you be out.

Fishing looking for a campsite right now good night nice campsite like mike said where are the bugs tomorrow we have to do an 800 meter portage right there and bruce told the outfitter told us that he thinks it might be a rough one.

So we'll have to see how that goes but if that's the case that'll be the first rough one that we've seen so it'll be probably probably about time for us to do one anyway but after that a few small uh narrow lakes and another camp and i think we're going.

To try and do some fish tacos tonight man i think we're gonna try and do some fish tacos tomorrow night so we'll be trolling all the way all right i'm headed to bed soon good night guys say goodnight guys.

Clean way for mike all right folks i'm in the old tent what oh nothing it's time for bed uh it's probably midnight now it's uh just finally getting dark so i'm gonna journal for a bit hit the hay and uh sleep in.

Slept well it is almost 9 8 45. i've been up went for a swim went to the bathroom back to bed warmed up and i think i'm about to get up now i saw i heard mike's stirring a boat so.

Maybe i'll make an oatmeal no maybe i'll make an omelette this morning because we have a big old portage pretty soon  this is the book i'm reading on this trip oh just talking the camera you're good it's uh it's an important read i think.

The under quilt top quilt system worked out really well wow beauty day beauty no bugs a little chilled hopefully because i was in the water already but you can tell there's no bugs though it's got to be chilly.

Okay we got the old happy yak hopefully we don't happy yak after eating this spanish omelette we're going to split that up with some ready-crest bacon just letting the old seasoned.

Frying pan heat up found this little grille here which is pretty uh uncommon for a wabakimi just find this stuff here so taking advantage of it it hugs the rocks a little bit easier than the mics without any effort so.

We're all about no effort in the morning no effort  i guess this stuff doesn't have to be on long enough just warm up  i need a spatula oh yeah.

Oh yeah all right breakfast is served bacon and eggs in the bush not too shabby watch out now this pan has a tendency to like sir i could have some kind of egg some kind of egg a little bit more clouds in the sky.

Today which is nice the sun still feels pretty hot but we're doing good with the weather no bugs today is the first day that we don't have to battle the wind so everything's coming up ketchup and mustard there's some pretty.

Wild clouds going on three little drop points pretty wispy it's pretty very pretty our first port is right up there and there is a bug on my screen perfect get from here look at this.

Well we're done the portage it was pretty decent bruce told us it might be difficult but it's pretty decent um we're into this beautiful little lake it's a different section it has a different feel to it trolling so hopefully i'm gonna catch a fishy.

Having a good time look at that got the wind at our backs nice breeze sun shining some clouds in the sky a few bugs the end of the portage was very buggy what a beautiful day what a nice spot too.

I feel good  so good all right got a fish on here trying to catch a fish all day a few hours at least a little pike  he's got a good run on him.

Got a good little run on him one this is the second pike i've pulled out of here this is a bigger one decent pike well we're on the move and it's not like we're in any kind of rush but i'm hungry and my food is right here in front of me.

So i'm gonna make myself up a little snack i brought some peanut butter this time this is gonna be a staple from now on i already didn't already show you guys this i might have just gonna do up a little peanut butter on flat bread bun.

Some toppings i'll probably use peanut m ms right now because i like that and they're right here next to me along with my dragonfly friend i need them eminem peanuts i'm gonna get off this rock too so much stuff there were some really large tadpoles.

And i go mike check out the size of these tadpoles and those chad pulls and i thought was quite amazing um gorgeous we're coming up to what looks to be like a blockade in the road.

We shall see this drops right off wow this is deep water right here i might be able to squeeze through here i'm gonna have to hop up hop over top of this log though full speed ahead oh no no big rocks big rocks oh there's the chad.

Poles look at all the chad poles guys they're huge all right i still might be able to get through that's crunching there are chad poles everywhere that one's got little feet little leggies good job buddy well that guy's still in his egg sack.

That's crazy in his frog juice cove there's a tab a big fat tadpole has a tail and two legs stuck in his green bubble of life crazy and i'm through that is the exact maximum weight you can go through.

There we go we got it through without getting out give her hell michael riding the rims right you bought him out god this is not my brother oh god all right so we're with the flow of the current which is nice.

And you can see that from the grass look at all of them there's so many tadpoles all right beautiful section we're gonna come up to a steep portage very soon or so it says on the map just remarking how pretty this lake is.

We're at the end of the line here i believe our port is right there what do you think mike is it uh steep does it live up to its name yeah this one's steve it's like a higher pitch than a staircase oh my gosh yeah it'll be fun i haven't had a hard one yet so we're.

We're due i'm up the first rung mike's getting ready the skeeters have found me now i go up that way okay it goes up there just look at it wait till you come around the corner oh my god dude okay.

Looks like it might flatten out a bit up there pretty nice portage up here there's mike in front still going the same way so we still got some ways to go rock karen we're off the elevation down into a little boggy part.

And now up again gotta be getting near the end of this thing do you see any blue up there a little bit but i wasn't banking it's not water it's not lake blue no all right so we're done the portage but we had to do our first goal of it at.

Least but we had to kind of break our way through this big heavy deadfall here so we're going to kind of clean it up a bit so we can come through easier with the canoes came through here here we go up the second set of this.

With the canoe definitely i'll be there for your boat any minute you just take a nap buddy okay here's the end not a moment too soon i got a deuce i got a deuce for the deuce time today my bum's bothering me after that.

Bruce bruce so i got to uh i gotta go in the water we're gonna excuse me we're gonna stop at this campsite where it says good high rock on this beautiful lake that we just portaged into we're not at camp yet we're gonna take a.

Break there spend an hour there or so eat some food i'm gonna do a swimming i'm not sure if mike is but it's hot and uh it's midday it's 2 23. but i need to swim i'm overheated i feel a little monkey but.

A little swamp but little swamp donkey anyway we'll get there soon first problem in two trips for me it's not so bad and it's really not that bad it's just been eating very late being late suppers anyways.

This is very pretty extremely pretty well that's it there and there's no joke it is high up on a rock i think i can see a fire pit up there but we're gonna head down to the next point right there because it looks like a softer landing and we're just hanging out for about an hour or so we're not camping there.

Here we come chadpoles so here i come chadpoles the slipperiest of the slipperyness  oh yeah oh yeah well pretty good best swimming pool i can see.

Not too shabby my legs are the same color as my shirt see just taking a load off here made a bunch of jerky we're pretty close to our campsite but there's a big 800 meter portage in between and that swim.

Really really refreshed us it's a little bit more hungry just fueling up relaxing we'll go take it on best day so far weather-wise yeah we're on our camping lake and it is beautiful.

Starting to feel the sun again i might take a dip when we get to camp i'm not sure but uh definitely we need to seek out some shade or hang up a tarp or two she's full sun it's almost five there will be a camping within the hour and then there's six hours more like.

Big ol lure big old lure i bought it just for this trip we'll go pike you gonna be okay there you go all right mike is almost at the camp let's go catch up with them.

Big spoon snow time we made no time to stay the so mike said it looks pretty good it looks pretty good from here too so i'm cool calling this home  what are we doing carp.

Because son that's it exposed campsite and it's what 5 30 and we still have five hours of light so we're just gonna put a tarp up so we have somewhere to sit while the sun's still blasting down on us we're gonna go between these trees in here.

And sit right here not too shabby got mike's tarp rigged up in an awning fashion with a breeze coming through mike had this idea which is great we get the breeze you get the shade we got the uh little bush buddy rock in here keeping.

The bugs down there's no mosquitoes here but there's incessant flies but uh for the most part they're calmed down a bit now because of the smoke from the bush buddy i'm doing rehydrating chicken shredded chicken rice.

And vegetables looks like this excuse me when a cold smoke gonna cold soak it for a while first just because i'm not ready to eat and this makes rehydrating it a little bit easier so i'm just going to fill it up until.

When it's floating a little bit and leave her sit for a minute what are you having pasta with ground beef some kind of like rose sauce carrots onions i don't know i don't really remember i guess we'll find out i should have had.

That yesterday at tsugiti island i know bowda all right this is done nice hearty meal and a whole lot of it i'm gonna throw some franks i made some notes on my last trip and one of them was bring frank's for this.

Meal it's good but bland even with the seasoning salt vegetables chicken very good if you shred the chicken it'll reconstitute so much better not if you cube it or anything it's really rubbery eh yeah it's hard to yeah rubbery and hard.

Super happy with this campsite we're out fishing i'm going that way the mic is going that way beauty night it is 9 30. we got 45 minutes till the sun hits the horizon.

There should be a little cove over here cut back in into a channel in a bay i'm going to try and fish there excuse me i'm hoping the walleye are more active tonight and it's just been because it's been hot excuse me hot that they've been scarce where are you what are you.

So i knew there was walleye in here it must just be hot too hot in the daytime sweet first cast right away hit right off this point uh that last one i got two seconds ago i was uh trolling this was cast and i'm sure this is going to be a walleye that's awesome super happy with that.

Catching the fish now i hope yep well i hope mike is too oh you feisty little guy feisty little guy i got a hard hit pedaling back towards mike on the other side of this channel this is a good decision to come in here i'm having fun in here it's nice and tight but i am missing the.

Sunset out there so this is the third fish this is a hard hit and i was trolling a big orange and copper colored spoon far out oh man this might be a pike.

Yeah it is look at this out of him on his way let's see how mike did might as well troll though i was playing with another pike he wouldn't comment he grabbed it like three or four times right at the side of the boat just jigging it.
